Holiday season in midtown

This is my first year working in Midtown (53rd and 7th ave), and I was wondering if anyone has fun christmas/holiday stuff I can check out during my lunch break. So, somewhere to grab a quick bite I can walk around with, then check out holiday displays or go see free lunchtime concerts, that sort of thing. I'm a pretty quick walker, so it doesn't have to be within 3 blocks or anything. Not completely food related, but I thought I'd give it a go.

  1. The holiday market at Columbus Circle has some good food options. (Pies & Thighs being one of them) and you can go see the light display at the Time Warner Center. Or you could go to Bouchon at Rock Center and then a stroll up 5th ave to see the decorations (crowded but festive, esp. after dark.) and some of the churches along 5th have free public concerts.
And if you want to spurge a little, go to the Grand Central Oyster Bar and then go up to the concourse to see the light show there. (the light show is every half hour from 11am to 9pm).

Check out the holiday market at Bryant Park if you have the time to make it down there and back during your lunch break.

  3. Not really a place for food, but Saks 5th Avenue always has a great holiday display every year.

@Jill - Pies and Thighs at Columbus Circle? How did I not know this?! Thanks. =)

Went today and no sign of pies n' thighs. There was wafels and dinges, and emapanada place, bratwurst, thai and maybe one or two other things. All fine, but nothing to satisfy my chicken biscuit craving.

Looks like they aren't coming this year.
Here is the PDF of vendors from the market website.

  7. oy. I checked last night and was so sad not to see pies and thighs! They were there last year but I just called them and they aren't doing Columbus Circle or Madison Sq Park Holiday Markets this year. Lots of hungry Manhattanites are officially bummed at this news.

No Pies n Thighs is the single worst food news I've heard all year.

  9. I second the idea to visit the holiday market at Bryant Park. Pick up a borek at the Turkish stand (closest stand to corner of 42nd and 6th) and stroll.
