A Trip to the New Location of Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House

Its downright crazy that  I have only eaten at Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle once and that the one time was 2 years ago AND before the move to the bigger location. Silly me. Last time I dug into the braised oxtail hand pulled noodle soup. I applaud my past self for choosing something a little funkier. For this visit, I had to pick a different version of the soup, plus I had to explore the menu a lot more.

Meat and Pickle-Flecked Potato Salad & other Bukharian Concoctions at Shish Kabab Palace

Neither the name nor the look of the storefront of Shish Kabob Palace is particularly enticing. This restaurant, located in a strip mall, certainly does not conjure up the image of a “palace”. You can’t judge a palace by its cover I guess; the sizable menu did a way better job at reeling me in than the meat stick decal on the door.

This palace serves Bukharian and Russian food. Bukharia is a region of Uzbekistan. From my other dining experiences with the cuisine of  Russian/former USSR countries I knew this meant  I could expect funky cold salads, dumplings in various forms, soups, and skewered meats.

Lunch, Brunch, French Toast and Bacon Muffins, and the Contender for City’s Best Sweet Potato Fries at Green Eggs Cafe

Green Eggs Cafe has 3 Philly locations. The menu has a zested up version of lunch and brunch with fun things like red velvet pancakes.  I tried 2 sandwiches from the savory menu and found some big pluses and big minuses. I also had to indulge in their crazy muffins…

Fully Loaded Vegan Hot Pot from Temple’s Vegan Truck

Last winter Craig LaBan wrote an article about different food trucks around town, most I had visited or at least heard of but one truck mentioned was totally new to me- the Vegan Truck on Temple’s campus. This struck serves Asian style vegetables and soy proteins.  Looking at the menu, it seemed that the fully loaded “hot pot” was the best way to check out how the truck handles their different non meat products.

The Capital Grille’s Summer Plates

This week I was invited back by The Capital Grille to try out their new summer additions to their $18 plates menu.

I am always so happy when The Capital Grille invites me back to try out their seasonal plates. The “plates” deal is always the same, $18 for an appetizer, entree, and a side dish. Every few months new seasonal menu items are added.  The perfect truffle fries and lobster roll are still on the “plates” menu and as hard as they were to forgo, I wanted to try the new items.

Nom Nom Ramen to the Rescue

I was truly giving up hope. Every time I had ramen in the city I was totally let down. When Nom Nom Ramen had its soft opening in March, I didn’t run over as soon as possible like I did with Ramen Boy. I was scared of being disappointed yet again. After getting sufficient reports from trusted friends that it was not crap ramen, I made my visit. I hoped to find love in a hopeless place.

The menu is all ramen, save for a single pork bun appetizer. Inside there are plenty of tables but no waiter service, which I have no problem with; order at the counter and wait for your name to be called.

Saltiness Dominates at Brodo

When I heard about Brodo’s opening earlier this month I liked the idea of a soup-centered place, but thought choosing to open in a warmer month was silly timing. But when Memorial Day festivities left me with a bit of a cold, I figured I should see if Brodo could cure me.
