To frit or not to frit? That is the question. And if the fritters are from Dean & Deluca, the answer is an emphatic: FRIT. I love apple fritters. They were among my favorite Sunday treats as a kid. Last year I realized that it had been years since I had my last fritter. I became fixed on breaking my fritter fast and intent that my first frit be hot and fresh from the bakery. I even posted on the Serious Eats NY Talk section for fritter recommendations. Alas, I only got one response that recommended the non-hot fritters at Dean & Deluca. I proceeded to ignore that recommendation for some months until the fritter craving kicked back in and I came upon one of my co-workers on her way back from Dean & Deluca, fritter in hand. When Kolache Mama closed on 45th Street between Madison+Vanderbilt, they were the second such business to close in that very location. One might even say the spot was cursed… that is, until now. Chickpea of the “always baked, never fried” Downtown falafel fame had moved uptown, and by the looks of Friday’s crowd, it’s here to stay. I’ve never seen anything on that street with lines out the door!

Last month’s joy over Omar’s triumphant return to the Little Morocco cart (NE corner of 39th+7th) quickly turned into anticipation for the unveiling of some new menu items. This isn’t exactly new, but it’s something I’ve been hoping for ever since kofta disappeared from the menu last year.

Yesterday the Rock Center concourse branch of Jacques Torres opened. When I heard that JT himself would be on hand for the official opening, and that there was free hot chocolate involved I had to go check it out. I dropped by just before noon and the store wasn’t crowded. Chef Torres himself was greeting people at the door. The shop itself is brightly lit and all done up for Valentine’s Day. There are 3 small tables for eating/drinking in and four additional stools at the bar. Read more »

As I type this the finishing touches are being put on Rock Center’s brand new Jacques Torres!!! I made a quick stop by at lunch today and the place is looking great. Peeking in from the window I could see an espresso bar and a few tables for eating in. And I’m pretty sure I spied Mr. Chocolate himself, doing some hands on lifting and set up. They are officially opening tomorrow and JT will be there from 10 until noon. So excited to see the Godiva space taken over by superior chocolate. Dessert win for Rock Center!

At long last, the enigmatic ChaPa’s Noodle and Grill (52nd between 8th & 9th) has opened to the public. Until only yesterday, the actual theme of the restaurant (aside from being about “noodles and grill”) was a mystery, and when we found out that these noodles and grilled food would be Vietnamese, we got really excited. So excited that I sloshed through some seriously crummy weather to check it out after work. I was, for the most part, pleased with what I saw and tasted. However, since this was their first night of operation, it would be unfair to comment on the food. Instead, here’s a preview of what you might get for lunch.

Word on the street is that classic Brooklyn pizzeria, Grimaldi’s is finally opening its Manhattan location in the Limelight Marketplace (on 6th Ave. btw. 20+21st) on Monday after months of delays. A quick call to confirm was met with the word ‘tentatively,’ but also with the much better words “free pizza.” All week – Yes, this week – from 12pm to 3pm, they will be handing out free slices to passersby. Freeloaders engage!

Wined and Dined put together a list of NYC’s best budget burgers and more than a few are in Midtown. ML mainstays the Burger Joint (on 56th btw. 6+7th) and Black Shack Burger (on Lex btw. 37+38th) made the cut, but the place we’re most interested in trying is the just out of bounds Stag’s Head (on 51st and 2nd Ave.) Their $7.25 burger comes with fries and is made with Pat LaFrieda beef. Yes please.

The Biryani Cart empire on 46th btw. 6+7th got a little bigger this week with the launch of Juicy Wings, a cart specializing in chicken wings. The new cart is situated on the north side of 46th, across from Meru’s other two carts. This week’s cold weather, and major snowfall, is not ideal for a brand new cart, but those who have braved the elements have been treated to an interesting new option in mobile dining.
