Zucker’s Bagels Coming to Grand Central

Ess-a-Bagel is about to get a run for their money. According to Eater, Zucker’s Bagels & Smoked Fish will be opening a new location on Lexington and 42nd Street. Their downtown location on Chambers Street is a favorite neighborhood spot and I can vouch for their hand-rolled baked on premises bagels. They’re mighty good and come from the same owner as Murray’s. No word on when they’ll be opening yet, but they will be serving their sandwiches along with La Colombe coffee.

PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Brooke”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Brooke, a quiche hating lawyer who seems to do a lot of food truck eating.

Name: Brooke

Age: 26

Occupation: Attorney Editor for a legal publishing company

Where in Midtown do you work? 46th & 3rd Ave.

Favorite Kind of Food: Italian, Sushi, Mexican…and really good buffalo wings. I went to college in Buffalo so I have pretty high standards for buffalo wings now, and really, who doesn’t love buffalo wings?

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Quiche…just the thought of it makes me sick.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: I’m a big fan of the chicken (original or grilled) wraps at Schnitzel and Things (45th and 3rd). It’s right by my office so it’s convenient and they give a pretty great amount of food for the money. Pulled duroc pork sandwiches from Num Pang (41st btwn 3rd & Lex). I also really like the salads and platters at Uncle Gussy’s (always parked at the corner of 51st and Park). Nick and Franky are two of the nicest people serving food in Midtown, they’re always so friendly, they leave you and your stomach happy.

Ma Peche

We recently posted about Má Pêche’s new lunch menu overhaul. Word on the street was that chef Paul Carmichael was going to focus on American cuisine. ‘Wichcraft to give free meals to Foursquare Mayors

The mayor eats for free everyday at 'Wichcraft.

If you’re still wondering what the point is to checking in on Foursquare, ‘Wichcraft just offered a pretty compelling reason. Starting today, all 18 ‘Wichcraft locations in New York and San Francsico will give a free meal a day to whoever is the current mayor on foursquare. The meal includes a sandwich, full sized salad, or soup and salad combo as well as a drink and one of their spiffy creamwiches – a value of up to $18. Every. Day. That’s huge.

While you’re jumping on the Foursquare bandwagon, be sure to follow Midtown Lunch to get tips on nearby lunch spots.

Bian Dang’s Fun Buns Cart is in Midtown Today: Just a little FYI in case you missed it on the ML Twitter Tracker this morning... Fun Buns NYC, Bian Dang's new pork belly cart side project, is parked on 48th btw. 6+7th today.  You can read all about it on the Downtown section of Midtown Lunch.

Take Notice of Noodies Thai Kitchen

Noodies Thai Kitchen

As we’ve lamented in the past, there are simply far too many mediocre Thai restaurants up and down 8th and 9th Avenue. But with the arrival of Pure Thai Cookhouse, there’s been a welcome shift towards more interesting Thai restaurants, and Noodies Thai Kitchen is a continuation of that trend.

But first, a correction – as dynamh pointed out in our opening report of this restaurant, the name is indeed ‘Noodies’, and not noodles. As such, the cozy atmosphere is one of the restaurant’s virtues, and reflects tasteful riffs on their namesake. Artwork featuring a topless, buxom female figure adorn the handsome exposed brick wall. Another abstract piece decorates the restroom. The high ceilings are lit by Edison light bulbs, and the rear wall is covered with a colorful collage of bowls. But more importantly, the menu features an unexpected line-up of Thai noodle dishes that offer respite from the irksome pad thais and drunken noodles, while remaining at the ideal ML price point.

No Idea Bar: Where your Name gets you Free Drinks

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so I thought maybe it was time to introduce a happy hour column to the site. Every week, our Happy Hour Correspondent posts about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

I don’t care how old you are or how much you make, hearing the word “free” is always music to the ears. As oftentimes “free” comes with a catch, this week’s post does carry a small stipulation. At No Idea Bar, each night is assigned a different first name, and anyone so named gets to drink for FREE from 5 PM – 11 PM. But make sure you bring friends, as you will not be eligible to receive free drinks if you show up alone. (They are a business, after all!). Ranging from Jen and John to Xizi and Aditi, No Idea’s Name Night allows for just about everyone to drink for free. There’s even a section on their site for you to pitch your (or a friend’s) name for Name Night.
