Free Peanut Alert: If any of you walked through Grand Central's Vanderbilt Hall yesterday, you would've seen a massive NCAA bracket board a promotion for National Peanut Month. Available are bags of hickory smoked shelled nuts, salted nuts, and large samples of Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats and Peanut Butter & Co. The promo's going on today as well--freeloaders, you know what to do.

Contributor Stalking (The “Happy Pi Day” edition)

Pie for Pi Day
Nerdy desserts provided by Brownie.

Brian turned green in this preview of Friday’s Midtown Happy Hour, Blondie and Brownie are celebrating 3/14 with fried pi and also fried pie, Chris found Korean bargains in Flushing, Donny ate his way through the menu at Whitehall, Rachel eyed airport sushi and I hung out with chefs and photographers at a Kitchensurfing party.

Elsewhere in the ML universe… Jamie ditched Philly and ate pork in the Dominican Republic, Andrea got a fancy fish sandwich from the Our Heros Truck Downtown and Zach raved about the chicken fingers at The Chicken Lady in LA.

Magnolia’s Flourless Chocolate Cupcakes are Actually Really Good

New Magnolia in Midtown

Thanks to Carrie Bradshaw and co, Magnolia Bakery is best known for their cupcakes. I’ve been down on Magnolia’s cupcakes before, they’re just not my thing. Too dry and too sweet for my taste. The red velvet is pretty good, but nothing I’d go out of my way for. I used to maintain that the best things on their menu are the non-cupcake items, but now I’m willing to make one exception: their flourless chocolate cupcake special. Read more »

Pitopia Serves Up a Solid Falafel

Pitopia opened in November, and it proceeded to narrowly overtake falafel favorite Taim in the 2011 readers’ poll. It’s pretty shocking for a newbie to win over Midtown — we are, after all, a pretty tough crowd — so quickly and easily and with such stiff competition. I’m of the mind that Taim is one of the best trucks on our streets today, but since they clearly must be doing something right at Pitopia, I finally went to check it out.

Our First Trip to Rock Center’s Blue Bottle Coffee

Blue Bottle Rock Center
Yesterday San Francisco’s Blue Bottle Coffee in Rock Center opened it’s doors. And I had a chance to hit up the cafe mid-morning to see how it was going. Read more »

PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Rebecca”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. I like pork and lobster just as much as the next guy, but I recognize that not everybody eats the same way I do. So today we decided to profile a luncher for the Kosher readers. If you’re the kind of commenter that gets angry by the mere existence of this sort of thing, you should probably just stop reading now.

Name: Rebecca

Age: 29

Occupation: Non Profit Marketing (but I swear I’m not the one who spams you!)

Where in Midtown do you work? Midtown West

Favorite Kind of Food: Frozen peas. I also love tuna fish on a cinnamon raisin bagel, which most people think is pretty weird but I think is pretty awesome salty sweetness.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Tomatoes! Peanut butter! Cantaloupe Soup!

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: For the kosher lunch scene, I like the salad bar at Jerusalem 2 on Broadway near 37th (just reopened in a new location at Jerusalem Cafe) because its a fixed price for unlimited items, including tuna, avocado, pineapple, nuts etc. I also love the grilled chicken wraps at Schnitzel Express (on 39th btw. B’way+6th) – especially the teriyaki chicken with BBQ sauce, onions and garlic mayo. They even have schnitzel sushi there!

Your First Look at the King of Falafel & Shawarma Express

King of Falafel in Midtown!

If any of you have had the fortunate opportunity to eat Astoria’s King of Falafel, you understand what caused this massive line yesterday. I stopped by around 2:30 to see how Freddy was doing and the story behind the cart moving to 53rd and Park. I also wanted to score some falafel, of course!
