Only One Week Left…

Only one week left until the big party… all proceeds go to benefit the Street Vendor Project.  And don’t forget, anybody who buys their tickets before the end of the day on Monday is entered to win a $100 gift certificate to Bon Chon Chicken.

Keen’s Serves Up Quality Happy Hour Freebies

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every week our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap. Mamacita is taking this week off, so Clay has stepped up to the plate.

Steakhouses don’t often make the pages of Midtown Lunch. There are plenty of them in the area, but few are ever what you’d call a bargain – unless you count Tad’s Steak, which I don’t. (Sorry Zach!) But, when Mamacita told me she’d be out of town and needed a sub for this week’s column, she mentioned that she heard Keen’s gave out freebies during happy hour that might be worth investigating. I was skeptical – not because I didn’t want an excuse to go to Keen’s, but because I’ve never thought of it as a place for a bargain. Still, I’m not one to turn down a chance to freeload, so I stopped in yesterday to take a look.

Eddie’s Pizza Launching First Ever Pizza Cart (And They’re Bringing it to Our B’day Party)

Despite the trouble that food trucks these days seem to be having finding spots, we’ve still seen our fair share of carts upgrade to food trucks (just this week Jamaican Dutchy announced that they would be launching a food truck on Monday), and obviously a lot of  the gourmet food trucks have gone brick and mortar, but truck to cart?  That’s a lot more rare.  Last year Wafels & Dinges added a couple of carts to their arsenal, and this week Eddie’s Pizza Truck is following suit.  That’s right… pizza from a halal style cart!

Check out interior photos of the oven after the jump…

Gorilla Cheese Truck Proves That Size Does Matter

It’s clear that grilled cheese sandwiches are having a moment in New York. Or at least some food entrepreneurs are hoping that’s true. Perhaps this all happened thanks to America’s Next Great Restaurant, where poor Eric was ousted too early and not given time to realize his grilled cheese vision. I bet if he saw what’s happening in New York right now (especially with all these extra dipping sauces), he’d be kicking himself.

Gorilla Cheese is the first of the triumvirate of grilled cheese trucks slated to hit the city this summer. They launched a few weeks ago, but made their first foray into Midtown last Thursday. The line was rather modest when I arrived around 1:00 and it took me only 10 minutes to order and receive my sandwich. That’s quite a turnaround from what Andrea experienced downtown the previous week. Either these guys have finally got their act together or the novelty of buying grilled cheese from a truck has quickly worn off.

Flatiron Lunch: Calexico is Awesome, And It’s Here To Stay

Every Friday our man UltraClay goes south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

_MG_3214 - Version 2

Today may be the last week day of Madison Square Eats, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t going to be at least one food option left in Worth Square after it’s all over. Calexico, the California-style Mexican cart that won a Vendy back in ’08 and got a rave from Andrea a year ago, is sticking around for at least the next year. They’ll be serving from 11am to 9pm every day – and according to one of the staffers, including a beer license, presumably using the same boundaries as have been in place for Madison Square Eats. I’ve stopped in at Calexico a few times since they arrived in Flatiron bounds, see what it’s all about after the jump.

Bread & Olive on 45th Becomes Karam

Karam signage

Lunch’r Mike sent us the heads up that Bread & Olive (45th btw 5th and 6th) is now under new management. The restaurant has been rebranded as Karam, but I paid a quick visit yesterday and the menu seemed exactly as I remembered it (same signage, too with the Bread & Olive stripped off). Any regulars notice a difference in the food? Let us know in the comments.
