$10 Kobe Beef Kalbi All Day at Gyu Kaku

Thanks to @winedanddined for sending along this one… to celebrate their 10th Anniversary, Gyu Kaku (on 3rd Ave. and 50th) will be serving $10 portions of U.S. kobe beef kalbi for the ML price of $10 (for 3.5 ounces). It’s probably not enough for a full lunch, but it’s still a good deal (normally it’s $26!) Limit one order per person, while supplies last. They open at 11:30am

Mrs. Fields Will Put Anything on a Giant Cookie

probably the most amazing Mrs Fields cookiegram ever

File this under things that make you say, WTF. A recent lunchtime walk in Rock Center concourse yielded this cookie gram gem.

At Lunch Now: If You’re Not On Line For Luke’s Lobster Right Now You’re SOL

In what should be a surprise to nobody, Luke’s Lobster Truck is a popular lunch choice today.  At 12:30pm, the line was already wrapped around 52nd Street and Lexington and not really moving too fast (it took me about 25 minutes to get to the front). Although once I ordered it was pretty quick.

The menu is limited to lobster, crab, and shrimp rolls. Half a lobster roll (which I know from other Luke’s experiences is not enough food) and the other full rolls meet ML prices of $8. But a full roll is $16. Check it out after the jump…

Things We Need in Midtown: Doner Calzone!?

From Lunch’er “Jason”:

I just spent a week in Scotland visiting my little brother who is spending the semester practicing non-sobriety/studying. Well, GB is now flooded with a blooming middle-eastern population, resulting in myriad British takes on things we find in NYC all the time, including plenty ML type versions of chicken/lamb and rice. However, there was one item that I had never seen before, and that was the Doner Calzone. Being the gluttonous sucker that I am, I of course had to order one. I ordered the above behemoth- chicken tikka donner, extra spicy (you know how calzones here sometimes have that pocket of steam that deflates at the first cut? Well this baby was jammed to the roof with chicken tikka). It came in a 10-inch pizza box, left a grease streak for days, and easily weighed 2+ lbs. This was all on top of well spiced chicken vertically shaved from the rotisserie, smothered in tikka masala, complete with grilled onions, and melty crispy cheese smothered over the top. Unfortunately I only have exterior photos because at the beginning, I was too hungry to use a fork and knife, and by the end (I only finished 2/3), I was seconds away from a devastating food coma. Perhaps this is something that a Cer Te could tweak or reinvent, because it was delicious.

We want to go to there.

Trying Out the New Treats at Momofuku Milk Bar

Milk Bar interior

This month I discovered via Twitter that Momofuku Milk Bar had switched up their menu adding a few new treats. They finally swapped in a new soft serve (blackberry-lime) and added a new bread (pickled jalapeño and cotija cornbread) and new cake balls (strawberry lemon). With so many news things on the menu, clearly a trip to check them all out was in order. Read more »

ML Happy Hour: The Ginger Man

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every week our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.  This week she handed over the reigns to Blondie, who hit up The Ginger Man with a bunch of ML regulars.

The Ginger Man

The Ginger Man (36th btw 5th+Park) became a Midtown landmark quite soon after its opening, as any place with 70 taps in the heart of New York would. Even though I’ve passed the age where I stop drinking swill and started drinking good beer, I’m still a bit intimidated by the beer bars. Then it was announced that the April Midtown Lunch Happy Hour was going to meet up there. Here was the chance to conquer my fear of a 70 tap/160 draft menu in the company of a few people who really know beer.
