For a Tax Day Sweet Treat, Head to D’Aiuto’s

DSC_0248 (2)

This year tax day is a few days later than the usual April 15th deadline and if you kick it old school and mail in an actual copy of your return you may find yourself taking a trip to the James Farley Post Office (on 8th Ave. btw. 31+32nd). My last year’s recommendation of NY Pizza Suprema still holds, but if you need something sweet to dull the pain of having to pay more taxes (or celebrate your refund!) then you might consider a stroll down the block to D’Aiuto’s.

Half Off Meze Grill: We aren't the hugest fans of Meze Grill (on 8th Ave. btw. 55+56th) but it's not terrible and if it's one of your go-to lunches you'll want to check Groupon out today.  They're offering $10 worth of food at Meze Grill for just $5.

Restaurant Riki Serves Okay Ramen But It’s the Sushi that Shines

IMAG0176

I have passed by Restaurant Riki many times these couple months (a few times on my way to the new Schnitzel & Things spot) but each time I merely glanced at their lunch menu. I didn’t pay much attention because the 1st thing I noticed on their lunch specials menu was the price ($15 is a bit over the ML price range.) But recently fellow Lunch’er, Beth, tipped us off to the fact that Riki serves ramen for lunch, and it’s only $9.50. With Ippudo expanding to Midtown, is there room for more ramen in Midtown?

A Friendly Passover Reminder: Tonight is the first night of Passover, so if you have a favorite Kosher lunch spot that you can't live without you might want to go today. They will all be closed starting tonight through the 26th (and some of them might already be closed in preperation.)

Fear Not, Hing Won is Back Open

I was dismayed to learn in the forums that Hing Won (48th btw. 5+6th) was closed on Weds. and Thurs. last week (with a yellow DOH sticker behind the half shut gate). Whatever closed them down must have been an easy fix, because when I stopped in on Friday they were open and everything appeared to be back to normal. And their latest inspection is downright shocking…

The Italian Sausage at Mondello Makes Me Wish I Had Ordered a Chicken Parm

_MG_1631 - Version 2

I decided to begin my search for a proper Italian sausage hero close to home at Mondello (on 37th btw. Mad+5th). Their chicken parmigiana hero has been a favorite of mine since I started working in the area nearly seven years ago.

ML Happy Hour: Ted’s Montana Grill Brings Big Sky Country To Midtown

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every week our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

I’ve never been to Montana. I don’t know anyone named Ted and most of all I tend to avoid places with gimmicky “take ya’ll back home” themes. They tend to disappoint. So why would I visit Ted’s Montana Grill? Could it be that I secretly wished to be where the buffalo roam? Could it be that deep within myself I yearned for a place where a woman can truly live free? Could it be that there was a massive void in my soul that only Big Sky Country could fill? Naah, it was probably the sign that advertised $5 signature margaritas and $3 draft beers from 4 to 7pm.

Great… Another Thing For Food Trucks To Worry About

Add community boards to the growing list of things that food trucks now have to worry about! In light of the Frites N Meats explosion on Monday, a member of the Tribeca community board expressed concern about about food trucks being “roving firebombs”. Even though DNAinfo has discovered that the Frites N Meats may have had more than the legal number of propane tanks on their truck at the time of the explosion, it seems a bit hyperbolic to punish all food trucks because of one rule breaker… especially considering this is the first incident like this that I can remember, and food trucks have been a part of the NYC landscape for years and years. Sadly, the anti-food truck movement will look for any reason to get rid of street vendors and this is now going to be added to the list of reasons.

Speaking of the Frites N Meats Truck… members of the NYC Food Truck Association will be donating a portion of their proceeds today to help the Frites N Meats Truck get back on their feet.
