At Lunch Now: Lily O’Brien’s is a Madhouse!

This is the scene outside of Lily O’Brien’s (on 40th btw. 5+6th) right now. Wow… cutting it a little close aren’t we guys?  (Apologies in advance if your girlfriend/wife sees you on this line.)

Pure Thai Shophouse is Now Serving Khao Soi

Pure Thai Shophouse FrontIs it possible to have too much of a good thing? Perhaps – but when it comes to Midtown lunches and good Thai food, I say go for the gusto. During my rave first look of Pure Thai Shophouse, luncher wayne inquired if they served khao soi, and I shared his admiration for the dish (at the time, they were not). However I recently stopped by Pure Thai for lunch, and noticed that they are now serving khao soi as a rotating daily special. Pure Thai has quickly become one of my favorite Thai joints in the city, and khao soi is easily my favorite dish in any Thai repertoire. As it turns out, too much of a good thing, is a great thing.

Biryani Cart Finally Adds a Paneer Roll to Their Lineup

Biryani Cart

My very first kati roll experience was at Kati Roll Co (the EV branch, sorry Midtown kids). My friend encouraged me to order their Achari Paneer roll, a spicy vegetarian roll filled with onions and paneer, a simple Indian cheese, topped with plenty of hot sauce. It was love at first bite. I’ve long hoped that Biryani Cart, my go to midtown kati roll spot, would add a paneer roll to the menu, so I was pretty excited to hear that last week they finally did. Read more »

ML Happy Hour: In Which We Finally Make It To The Stag’s Head

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every week our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

The Stag’s Head has been a great location for a happy hour with friends for a while. ML regulars even did a meet up there last year. The thoughtful beer selection features a seasonal rotation of microbrews, many of which, if you time it right, meet the $5 mark. Stag’s also has a delicious and indecently early happy hour beginning at 11am. In summertime the roof deck provides the opportunity to bask in the warm sun with a drink in hand. So why haven’t we ever written about Stag’s Head? Maybe it’s that the location is too far east and not in Midtown proper. Maybe because we’d like to keep the tourists away. Maybe because there are too few bar stools at Stag’s and I like to keep my bartender to myself. Whatever the case, it was time, so I decided to stop by this week and grab a pint.

Last Chance For Choice Eats Tix: Choice Eats (aka the greatest tasting event of the year as far as we're concerned) has finalized their lineup, and tickets are definitely going to sell out. There aren't too many Midtown spots, but most of the places participating would be Midtown Lunches if they were in Midtown (i.e. cheap and freakin awesome.)  Tickets are only $45... get em now while you still can.

Shack Fatigue? Schnipper’s Serves Up a Delicious Burger

In the two years that it has been open, Schnipper’s Quality Kitchen has always seemed to covet a spot amongst New York’s burger elite. Initial reactions to their signature offering were good, but not great. While Schnipper’s was quietly stepping their ground meat game up, by cooking patties to order and switching to LaFrieda beef, Shake Shack opened a few blocks away and the stakes got higher. Schnipper’s burgers have seemingly been climbing up the ranks of public opinion for a while now, so I decided to celebrate their 2 Year Anniversary with my first visit, and one of their new and improved cheeseburgers.
