New Halal Truck Pops Up on 33rd Street

IMG_2527

Midtown South doesn’t have nearly the curry cart options found in the Rock Center area. There are a couple here and there, like the XPL truck on 33rd and 6th Avenue and the cart on 35th and 5th where I got the faux Italian sausage.  So, I was psyched this morning to see a new Halal Truck on 33rd and 5th, right across from Little Italy Pizza. The more the merrier, I say. No word on how long they’ll be around, so if you work near the Empire State Building and want some street meat without the schlep, check it out…

Biryani Cart’s Juicy Wings Gets Tabled Until March: There's been some grumbling about the new Juicy Wings Cart (on 46th and 6th) being AWOL and yesterday Lunch'er Matt confirmed the bad news: "Just got back from the Biryani cart. They won't have any wings or cheesesteaks until March. They blamed the cold."  Urgh.  Another reason to hate the freakin' weather.

At Lunch Now: Do You Think Midtown East is Ready For Some Fast Casual Thai Food?

Newly Open Dee Daa Thai (on 44th btw. Lex+3rd), Today at 12:48pm

Answer = Yes.

PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “John”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s John, a media relations exec who hates boiled zucchini.

Name: John

Age: 47

Occupation: Media relations executive

Where in Midtown do you Work?: Goodman Media, 7th Ave between 49th and 50th

Favorite Kind of Food: Turkish, with Italian, German, and Japanese as close seconds. Dim sum, especially chive buns and chicken feet. And – don’t laugh – I love English food.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Boiled zucchini – I mean, why would anyone do this to zucchini? I will eat anything else, including worms (actually beetle larvae), which I’ve had a few times, notably in Mexico on a tortilla with onions and peppers. It was good, but also had a taste reminiscent of putting your tongue on an open light socket.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Hallo Berlin Express on 9th and 50th – “The Freakin’ Deal”, choice of one wurst, one German meatball, potatoes, red cabbage and winekraut, $9.00. Margon (on 46th btw 6+7th), Cuban Sandwich $6. I love Margon’s ‘hole-in-the-wall’ size and even the crowded atmosphere. I’ve been a customer of Hallo Berlin since Rolf Babiel first founded the Vendy-winning cart on 54th and 5th in the mid-80s. I ate there maybe twice a week when I worked at NBC and as often as possible when I didn’t. I was very saddened when he passed away last year. I’m really happy that his family is keeping the restaurant on 9th and the beer garden on 10th going.

ChaPa’s Banh Mi is Decent But Far From Perfect

ChaPas Banh Mi

Is there such thing as the perfect sandwich? Perfection is subjective, but a proper bánh mì comes close to that lofty moniker in my opinion. In the pursuit of a good bánh mì in Midtown, we’ve tried fancy versions, we’ve tried bad versions, we’ve tried vegetarian versions, we’ve tried chain restaurant versions, and now we’ve finally tried the version at the newly opened ChaPa’s Noodle and Grill (on 52nd btw. 8+9th).
