Midtown Lunch

The first of the four food kiosks in Times Square we told you about last month opened yesterday right in the middle of all the pedestrian foot traffic on Broadway near 45th Street. Salume is an outpost of an Italian sandwich shop in Soho. They claim to make real Italian panini, the likes of which New York has never seen.

As I was approaching it was hard to tell if there was a line for Salume or if that crowd of people were just tourists mindlessly gazing at themselves on the big Forever 21 advertisement. It was the latter. The only people at the Salume cart when I arrived were the workers and the management- who went on to tell me about the entire menu.

In case you didn’t notice the guys with signs and flags walking up and down 3rd Ave. yesterday, Naked Pizza btw. 57+58th Street is indeed open. The green flags made me think cell phone company more than pizzeria, but Sprint PCS this is not. Naked Pizza is the latest branch of a healthy pizza chain based out of New Orleans.

This Saturday, Slow Food USA has challenged everybody around the country to get together with friends and family for a “slow food” meal that costs under $5 per person- because as they say “slow food shouldn’t have to cost more than fast food”.  Well, ‘wichcraft has decided to step up to the plate to help make it happen… and they’re doing it a day early! (So that Midtown lunchers can enjoy the spoils.)  On Friday, September 16th all 13 ‘wichcraft locations in Manhattan will be selling their signature roasted eggplant, zucchini, ricotta cheese and arugula sandwich, with a side of marinated chickpeas and a 12 oz unsweetened Mighty Leaf iced tea for just $4.82.  Hard to argue with that…

Brownie discovered tasty tacos at Buce in Meriden, Connecticut, Blondie provided a guide to the New York Wine and Food Festival, Chris went sandwich shopping at Andy’s Sandwich and Smoothies in Honolulu, Brian begins a new adventure seeking the best beer in New York and I still want you to vote for me in the the about.me Times Square billboard contest.

Elsewhere in the ML universe… Andrea found a General Tso’s express window at Koko downtown, Jamie tried out the new Latin Farmer food truck in Philadelphia and Zach stuffed himself with pork belly from Jang Tou Bossam in LA’s Koreatown.

Do you hate salads, generic delis, and people who eat the same boring lunch every single day?  Midtown Lunch is looking for some new eaters who love to go that extra mile for a decent lunch.  Writing experience a plus, but not as important as your enthusiasm for the mid-day meal.  This is a  freelance position with the potential to develop into more for the right candidate. Just a friendly reminder for those of you interested in being a part of Street Meat Palooza (our annual battle to determine the best plate of chicken and lamb over rice). The event is closed to the public, and the only way to score an invite is to nominate your favorite plate of street in Midtown.  The nominations close tonight at 6pm, and the winners will be chosen before the end of the week.  And remember, you can’t bitch about the finalists if you don’t bother nominating your favorite.

Looks like we forgot to mention one very important thing about Num Pang (on 41st btw. Lex+3rd) in yesterday’s post about their new menu items… you can get them delivered now!  According to Eater, the delivery zone is 28th St to 51st St. btw. 1st and 5th Avenues with a minimum order of $25.
