Like so many seasonal pleasures, the Hot Soup Carts are back… or at least the one on 45th and 5th… is back in Midtown (are there more, or is this the same one moving around?). I’ve noticed the mixed reviews from both contributors and Lunchers about Hot Soup, I had the opportunity to taste a few of the soups this week.
We don’t spend much time on this site talking about salads (sorry I even said the word), but many people in Midtown seem to like the green stuff. Case in point: a new Chop’t location is opening on 40th Street near Park Avenue. This will be Midtown’s sixth location and the only good news we think that can come from it is that when they finally do open, they usually offer a day of free salads. Free makes everything better, no?

Brownie gives us a look at past Burmese food she’s had at the Myanmar Baptist Church Food Fair. This year’s fest is coming up this weekend.
Brian completed his third and final year going through Time Out NY’s 100 Best dishes in New York, Rachel played hooky and had brunch at home, Blondie had fancy desserts at Gotham Bar and Grill, Brownie is heading to Queens this weekend to explore Burmese foodat The Myanmar Baptist Food Fair and I am planning another trip down to South America.
Elsewhere in the ML universe… Andrea is psyched that pasteles have returned to the menu at Sandra’s Food Spot Cart downtown, Jamie checked out Asian fusion tacos in Philly and Zach perused the three new stone pot bibimbaps at Jeon Ju in Los angeles.
Our Heros Truck Is Off the Road Temporarily: Andrea over at Downtown Lunch is reporting that Our Heros Truck is off the road, letting fans know by tweet last night. Details as to why are scarce at this point, but those who enjoyed their sliders and huge sandwiches, like Brian did back in June are sure to mourn the news. No word yet as to the fate of their slider cart. UPDATE: The cart is actually still on the street, and the truck will be back once they find a replacement manager.

In May, we heard that New York’s leading maker of Mac and Cheese, S’MAC, launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the opening of a branch in the lower boundaries of ML. Then, in July, I encouraged you all to quit your jobs and go work at the new restaurant. Finally, after months of me stalking them, they have opened!
Fans of Nino’s (46th btwn 5th and 6th), the well known Midtown Lunch spot known for their great chicken parm, have been waiting over a year and half for the place to reopen after the place fell victim to a fire. And we’re glad to report that finally some real progress has been made. Yesterday, we spotted some goings-on outside the old restaurant location, including a banner sporting their new name, Nino’s 46, and advertising brick-oven pizza. We asked the guys working on the storefront if they knew when Nino’s 46 would re-open, and they couldn’t give any definitive answers. But we’ll stay on the case!
Taam Tov is Back Open After Brief DOH Closure: Yesterday DNAinfo reported just before lunchtime that Kosher Uzbeki restaurant and Midtown Lunch classic Taam Tov (on 47th btw. 5th + 6th) was shuttered by the DOH. At 55 points, this inspection was less serious than others they've weathered and fans will be glad to know that by the time we stopped by yesterday afternoon they had already reopened. Routine!

The Manganaro’s faithful, while most likely lamenting their Bourdain-praised red sauce served with a 20th-century New York attitude, can at least rest easy that their old digs are still Italian and not in an Olive Garden way. Still, Midtown Lunch laments the introduction of out-of-price-range fare in general, doubly so in the place of a classic. Tavola, the brick oven Italian restaurant that took Manganaro’s old space, has opened quietly and while they have yet to serve up lunch, too little of their menu is within our $10 limit to attract much fanfare.
Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Brad, a stats guy who has spent the past two years waiting for his “freak of the week” moment…

Favorite Kind of Food: I was raised by an Asian mother, so I love any type of cuisine that combines meat and rice. My guilty pleasure is a greasy burger and a beer, though I have to try to limit the indulgences given that blood pressure and cholesterol weren’t things that I worried about in my 20s.
Least Favorite Kind of Food: Salads. Avocados, in particular, make me nauseous.
