April Means Philly Turns French

There are a lot of French things going on this month, have you been taking advantage of them?

Starting tomorrow, in honor of the Philly International Festival for the Arts, restaurants will be serving special menus created by duos of local and French chefs. [Uwishunu]

There will be a street fair on Broad St on April 30th with food vendors. I hope the sky is clear that day.

A pop up bistro is open in the Kimmel Center for Dinner and Sunday Brunch, also for PIFA.

What interests me more though is the French crepe cart in the Kimmel Center, I should probably check that out? Its open from 11-3 and  5-8.

Not to be left out, McGillin’s is putting on its beret with menu items like French Onion Soup, French Muffuletta, Beef Bourguignon, Moules Frites and Pizza Provencal, and of course  a French Martini to go with it all.

Have you enjoyed any of the PIFA events yet?

Will Makiman’s Sushi Fusion Lift the Spruce St Curse?

Maybe the curse will be lifted? Over the summer I was impressed with the sushi roll deal at Muntin. Muntin had replaced Misso, which had also served sushi. But Muntin didn’t  make it either, and now Makiman is having its go at it.

I decided to forgo the usual bento box, they so often disappoint me. Instead I sampled  around the regular menu, trying some classics and some crazy Makiman innovations.

Vegan Banh Mi at Loving Hut

Loving Hut opened on South Street this summer. I have to admit, this wasn’t an opening that thrilled me. Its all vegan, I like meat. But I have started to really enjoy meat substitute lunches, like Govinda’s Cheesesteak. So when I was walking by and hungry, the Loving Hut signed beckoned.

Wednesdays at Copabanana Means 1/2 Price Burgers

This week Profiled Luncher Lauren checks out a whole bunch of the burger options for half price at Copabanana. (Hint: Call now and make your reservation for lunch today)

Located at 40th & Spruce, Copa Banana serves standard bar fare with a Mexican and Caribbean focus. Though the dive-like atmosphere scares off some, Copa has become one of my guilty pleasures. One friend is constantly making fun of me for “my Copa obsession,” but I explain to him that it’s all about managing your expectations. You can’t go into Copa expecting a Village Whiskey burger, but if you expect good, greasy bar food, then that’s what you’re going to get. I’m a fan of Copa’s fajitas, nachos, and margaritas, but I didn’t realize until recently that their burgers are half price on Wednesdays from 11:30 AM – 4:30 PM. Apparently, I’m the only person in University City who didn’t know because the restaurant has been packed each time I’ve gone. Even if you’re going for a quick lunch, I would suggest calling ahead to make a reservation.
