Vegan Banh Mi at Loving Hut
Loving Hut opened on South Street this summer. I have to admit, this wasn’t an opening that thrilled me. Its all vegan, I like meat. But I have started to really enjoy meat substitute lunches, like Govinda’s Cheesesteak. So when I was walking by and hungry, the Loving Hut signed beckoned.
I went with the Loving Hut sandwich, their take on a banh mi? It took forever to get my sandwich, not really sure why… it isn’t like they had to slaughter a chicken for me. Were they walking really slow in the kitchen to save more of the planet’s energy? The $6 sandwich came with big strips of soy protein. It was a really filling sandwich; it was tasty and really juicy in a way that makes it ok to not have meat. As a cilantro lover, I could have used more in there. The combo of lettuce and special sauce was familiar in a way that I could not put my finger on at first, it was Big Mac-ish. I think it mostly has to do with the sauce itself and the fact that it was sticking to the warmed lettuce. I would be willing to come back and check out the Curry with more of that soy protein or a Vegan Burger to see how they handle eggplant.

I might have to check that out. However, I doubt it will come close to the perfect vegetarian banh mi – that is the lemongrass tofu banh mi at QT Sandwich in Chinatown.
