Simit & Smith Opens Downtown, Second Location Coming Soon

Simit-and-Smith-simit

Sort of like a skinny bagel. Via Tribeca Citizen.

Have you ever wished for a thinner bagel with a larger hole in the middle? Enter the Turkish simit, which can now be found in Downtown Lunch territory on Worth St. (btw. Broadway & Lafayette) which is the second location in the city. There’s also a shop coming soon to William & John streets. In addition to the simit and loaves of bread, you can get sandwiches and coffee. First impressions seem to be favorable, and at least one Lunch’er has written in an said they had a very good sandwich there. Expect a full report soon!

jersey mike's sammy

We got word yesterday from Lunch’er Robert that Jersey Mike’s Subs not only opened on Maiden Lane (at Gold), but has a deal that involved almost-free food:

Just wanted to let you guys know. That Jersey Mike’s on Maiden Lane opened today. They’re doing a promotion: for a $2 donation to Meals on Wheels you get a free regular or mini cold sub.

So, basically you’re getting a sandwich for $2 which is a deal you can’t beat, unless you like $1 pizza. If any of you have eaten here, let us know your first impressions in the comments!

Update: We heard from Jersey Mike’s that they distributed 23,000 vouchers for sandwiches in a promo that’s happening through Sunday, Aug. 4, and yes, you get a free regular sub with a minimum $2 donation to Citymeals-On-Wheels. They’re also open for breakfast, in case you’re into eating your first meal of the day at a sub shop.

Dough Re Mi Is Finally Opening Today, Serving Breakfast And Grilled Cheese

After a grand opening went awry due to hurricane Sandy, Dough Re Mi is finally opening today serving us doughnuts, bagels and grilled cheese, among other breakfast and lunch items.

The shop at Water St. and Coenties Slip was set to open in the fall of 2012 when the hurricane flooded the area and caused extensive damage in the storefront. You can read the whole story here, but the news you really care about is they’re finally ready to feed us. According to their Facebook page, the hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and if any of you check them out on opening day, let us know how the food was in the comments.

Zigolini’s Reopens, With New Mexican Offshoot Guac Star

zigolini's

If the lines going out the door yesterday were any indication, you all were happy that Zigolini’s is open once again at Pearl St. & Coenties Slip. The grand opening came seven months after heavy damage from hurricane Sandy closed the doors of the popular deli and hot food lunch shop, and the sit down space next door. But wait, there’s more!

Roti Mediterranean Grill Opening Next Week

roti grill wrap

You can get items such as the above when Roti Mediterranean Grill opens on Monday. Tip of the hat to Lunch’er Daniel who sent in the tip that the latest chain spot at Pearl St. & Pine is doing employee training today and over the weekend, and will open on Monday (no word on what time, but we will update when we find out). The place is a Mediterranean take on what seems like a million variations of lunch spots where you choose a rice plate, pita sandwich or salad with a choice of protein or vegetables, etc.

Look for a review early next week and view this another option when the line at Chipotle down the street is a little out of control.

Dave’s Hoagies Brings Philly-Style Sandwiches To Cedar St. Today

We got word last Friday that a new sandwich shop called Dave’s Hoagies is set to open today for lunch on Cedar St. (btw. William & Pearl). Sure enough, when I walked by finishing touches were being put on the small space that’s near some other Downtown Lunch favorites.

Prices are a little higher than what you’re used to for a sandwich, but these are probably fancier than what you’d get from the generic deli. If you love the sandwiches of Philadelphia, this is your spot. Take a look at the menu straight ahead!  Read more »

Clarke’s Standard took over the space and had to do a lot of renovations before opening.
