Untamed Sandwiches Unleashes Braised Meats on Midtown

When Sarah announced the upcoming opening of Untamed Sandwiches on 39th, it generated quite a bit of hype. The prospect of a Midtown establishment serving up delicious sandwiches with a selection of braised meats sounded almost too good to be true. I certainly wouldn’t refer to Midtown as the Mecca for delicious or inventive sandwiches, so Untamed Sandwiches was fulfilling a necessary gap. I set a reminder on my phone, so I could get there Day 1 and try it out. I apologize in advance for what can certainly be considered a more comprehensive much longer review, but there was a lot to be said for Untamed Sandwich.

Flatiron Lunch: Shaka Burrito Has Your Healthy Post-Surfing Meal

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

For our last edition of diet-friendly Flatiron Lunches (and before the mutiny is complete), I present Shaka Burrito, a slightly out-of-bounds Hawaii-themed healthy burrito and taco place. Started as a Jersey Shore restaurant in Long Branch, Shaka opened on East 23 a couple months ago.

HinoMaru’s Lucky Cat Ramen is Good for the Hood

Midtown East is battling the behemoth that is the Midtown West Ramen Scene. Some may argue that Ippuddo West, Totto Ramen and Ivan Ramen Slurp shop are the best that New York City has to offer. So what’s one to do if they work in midtown east? Sure, there’s Hide-Chan with it’s dizzying amount of ramen varieties or you can trek through the snow and Polar Vortex past 8th avenue to the big boys. If none of that sounds appealing, enter Lucky Cat.

A Look at the Free Food Inside #PepCity

Pepsi Cola sign

Want a better look at the food inside that dome in Bryant Park aka #PepCity? Well, lucky for us, I attended their media preview this morning because… well… free food. Yes, every dish makes use of Pepsi Co. products, the sample tasting size is small and it needs to be eaten immediately or will go cold quickly. But some of them are quite delicious and if you happen to stop by today (or Saturday if you’re stuck working on the weekend), here’s what you should double fist…

Hot Clay Oven Closed for Renovations

After opening only five months ago, the Hot Clay Oven on 3rd Ave. (btw 44th+45th) is now closed for renovations. The sign in the window says it’s only temporary but doesn’t say how long it’s expected to last. Now that naan wraps are out of the question for the time being, where will you get your Indian fix in Midtown East?

Anka Grill Offers Pricey Turkish Options

Lexington Ave. in between 54th and 55th is a great block to grab lunch on. You’ve got Clarke’s Standard, Glaze Teriyaki, and Sur Empanada Factory. And now you can also get Turkish food thanks to the newly arrived Anka Turkish Grill.

Super Bowl XLVIII Brings Super Fun, Super Chaos, to Midtown

On February 2nd, 2014 Super Bowl XLVIII will commence at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. As part of the festivities, the NFL and its sponsors are preparing a handful of events in the days leading up to the big game. Lucky for us, Midtown has been chosen as the hub for the majority of these activities. Depending on your point of view, this may prove to be a blessing or a curse. Either way, I wanted to take this opportunity to lay out the information so all of us can prepare for the impending excitement.

Untamed Braised Meat Sandwiches Opening Next Week

And now for a completely biased news post.

I am incredibly excited to tell you a friend of mine is opening a ML sandwich shop called Untamed on West 39th Street Tuesday, January 28. The menu is not totally finalized, but the focus is sustainable slow-braised meat sandwiches (with a vegetarian option or two). I have been told one of the items will be a cider braised pork butt sandwich with sharp cheddar, broccoli rabe, pepper jelly and mustard (test production pictured above). Yum, right? I promise to let you know more about the shop, and I also promise not to review it myself – we know I would only have nice things to say.

Flatiron Lunch: Sweetgreen Salads Rock

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Continuing the month of healthy eating with Flatiron Lunch, we have Sweetgreen, an import from the D.C. area. When they opened, I notified a friend or two in the area to check them out, and a friend, that used to live in D.C., made sure I knew how much she loves their caesar salad. The New York Times even picked up their story and their passion for ingredients.

‘wichcraft Brings Grilled Cheese & Soup to Bryant Park

As I began to reminisce about Melt Shop from earlier this month, and just before the snow started and the temperature dropped to single digits (obviously), I found myself craving some grilled cheese and tomato soup once again. Sure, I could schlep up to 50th and indulge in their Fried Chicken grilled cheese, but that leaves me no time to get back to my desk and watch YouTube videos for the remainder of my lunch. Is that a trade-off I’m willing to make? Fortunately, it wasn’t necessary. After a quick Google search, I was reminded that ‘wichcraft had opened their Grilled Cheese & Soup stand in Bryant Park – only a block away. Was this going to fulfill both of my stringent lunch requirements – grilled cheese with tomato soup and YouTube videos?
