Sur Empanadas Opens on Lexington Avenue!
The wait is finally over! After anticipating its opening since last February, Sur Empanadas fried up their first set of Argentinian empanadas in Midtown East this past Tuesday. The empanada factory and bakery servers gourmet, fried, and regular empanadas ($2.75-$3.65 each) in addition to a selection of sandwiches ($5-8), pastries, cakes, desserts, and ice cream. We have a peek at the full menu (and an early review from Lunch’er “Hightemp”) after the jump…
Here’s the full menu! Drunken chicken empanada? Sign me up. Can these empanadas go head to head with the infamous Nameless Empanada Carts? Here’s what Lunch’er Hightemp had to say:
The store is cute though awkwardly laid out (which seems to be all too common in this area). A good variety of savory empanadas, sweet pastries, and sandwiches. The empanadas are between 2.75 and 3.75 each. I got three for lunch (pictured). For just shy of $10 total, I got a spicy beef, a flank steak & cabernet, and a cheese & spices. They seemed to be on the small side so I could definitely have had more. So, for me, I guess a meal would more likely be around $12.Flavors were good (the two meat ones were particularly tasty). That said, they got cold (really cold) by the time I got back to the office.I think If I’m going to walk down that way to spend $12, I am probably more likely to go get a sandwich at Little Collins or teriyaki at Glaze. That said, the sweet pastries looked really good… So I’ll have to go back and try a few more things before I make a final judgement.
