Midtown About to Get a Second Maoz

That didn’t take long… Roma Pizza, the pizza place that took over from Empanada Joe’s last year (on 8th Ave. btw. 43+44th) has closed, and will be replaced by a new branch of Maoz Vegetarian. It’s pretty close to Midtown’s other Maoz (on 7th Ave. and 40th) but if there’s anybody who can be successful turning this seemingly cursed space into a success we’d put our money on the falafel chain. No word yet on when it’s going to be opening. Thanks to Lunch’er Marissa for the tip.

Schnitzel & Things is Free All Week Long

Just spotted this over on Wined and Dined… The Schnitzel & Things Truck has been co-opted by Austrian Airlines this week and they’ll be giving away free food all week long.  The good news is they’ll be in Midtown practically every single day this week (Flatiron managed to steal one day), giving away free bites of schnitzel from 11am until 3pm (or when supplies run out).  What’s that?  You were hoping for a filling meal from Schnitzel & Things Truck this week, and free samples aren’t going to cut it?   Quit your whining.  It’s just one week… and everything is FREE!

Check out the full schedule after the jump.

NYC Cravings Almost Slams Into Elementary School!?

Our favorite Taiwanese fried chicken and pork chop truck dodged a huge bullet on Thursday.  According to their Facebook page, the brakes (and we’re hearing steering as well) went out on their truck while they were driving and it took some crazy fast emergency brake action by their very own Diana to save the day (“within a foot from hitting an elementary school”.)  We’re just glad to hear everybody is ok, and it’s business as usual today.  They should be on 50th btw. 6+7th, but you’ll want to check the ML Twitter Tracker just to be sure.

Midtown Happy Hour: Breeze Away the Day w/ $3 Beer Specials

Who doesn’t like an all day happy hour? I walked by Breeze Thai-French Kitchen this week and was intrigued by their drink specials that run all day. From 11AM to 11PM they offer $2 shots, $3 beers and $5 house well drinks at the bar. I love a good deal that I can catch at any time!

Your First Look at La Biblioteca’s Tequila Bar Tacos

_MG_6863 - Version 2

I haven’t touched tequila in years. Just a whiff brings back memories of my 20s and “just one more shot” at 3am on a Tuesday night. No, thanks. That said, I’ll do a go a long way for a good taco. When I read about Zengo’s new lunch of three tacos for $10 in their tequila bar, I knew I’d have to suck it up and bury those shredded memories to get my hands on some high class tacos.

Uncle Gussy is Taking the Day Off: On the ML Twitter Tracker today... Rickshaw is on 45th, Wafels & Dinges is on 52nd, Korilla BBQ is on 55th, and Schnitzel & Things is on 52nd with a limited amount of their "crack soup" (which we keep hearing is amazing).  As for Uncle Gussy?  Their free food giveaway went off yesterday without a hitch, but they've decided to take today off to regroup and figure out what they're going to do.

Flatiron Lunch: Stick With the Daily Specials at The Sirtaj

Every Friday our man UltraClay goes south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

_MG_8099 - Version 2

The Sirtaj is hidden in plain sight. Eclipsed by neighbors Hill Country and barbecue bar The Hog Pit, you could walk by it a million times without really considering walking in. I checked it out on the recommendation of a friend who is easily as into food as I am, but didn’t see what the big deal was about until I started to explore the daily specials – including vegetarian options I would never consider otherwise.
