Midtown Happy Hour: Reconnaissance Work at Snafu Bar

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so I thought maybe it was time to introduce a happy hour column to the site. Every week, our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

Anyone following the ML forums can see the natives are restless for some happy hour refreshments. Some bars mentioned I may have stopped in at once long ago or already covered. I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to refresh my memory and also give you all a quick glace at the possibilities. One of the bars that caught my eye was Snafu on the Eastside. I decided to do some undercover recon work to scope out the place. I know it’s a thirsty job, but someone has to do it.

Black Shack & ‘wichcraft Now Serving Beer

beer

My Happy Hour review is coming up at 3, but I thought I’d mention this interesting news for those of you who can’t wait.  Black Shack Burger (on Lex btw. 37+38th) has now added beer to their libation list of shakes, sodas, tea and lemonade. Current brews available are Corona, Sly Fox Phx. Pale Ale, Sly Fox Pike Pilsner and Heineken. This officially enters them in to the pantheon of post work places to head to for a burger and beer. And what do you know, it’s Friday already. Eastside lushes engage!

In related news… Blondie sent me word that the ‘wichcraft in Rock Center has also added beer.

Cer Te Hits Pay Dirt Again With Chubby “Vietnamese” Sandwich

It might have sold out on Tuesday, but I finally got my chance to try out the “Chubby Chinese Girl” February Midtown Lunch special sandwich from Cer Te (on 55th btw. 5+6th),  submitted by the Chubby Chinese Girl herself. Duck and hoisin sauce. I don’t need to say more, but I will. Marinated duck, chili sauce, hoisin sauce, cilantro, cucumber, and pickled radishes on a baguette for $8.95. Yes, please.

Twitter Tracker: On the old ML Twitter Tracker... Street Sweets is on 50th, taking last minute Super Bowl orders and looking to hire. Rickshaw Dumplings is on 45th, Wafels in on 60th, Jiannetto's is on 47th, and Cer Te has got lobster rolls today.

Flatiron Lunch: Forget the Pizza, Maffei’s Baked Stuffed Fish is Where It’s At

Now that Downtown has its very own section of the site, what are we going to post on Fridays at 10am? Answer… how about a new column devoted to those lunches just south of the ML boundaries. Please give a warm welcome to Jason Lam from the blog Me So Hungry. Every Friday at 10am he’ll post about lunches in Murray Hill south, Grammercy, Flatiron, and everything in between… or as we’ll call it from now on: Flatiron Lunch.

Everybody loves pizza, and it’s not unusual to see my co-workers come back to the office from Maffei Pizza (on 6th Ave. and 22nd) with a Grandma slice. It’s very much your usual New York pizzeria –pizza, pastas, soups, and parmesan sandwiches. But what I think sets them apart is their baked stuffed fish.

Hello From Los Angeles: The Khao Soi is Hot, Come On In!

By now you’ve probably heard that I’ve moved to L.A. (although our new contributors are doing such an amazing job I can see how you would have not noticed!)  Anyway, I just started the L.A. section of Midtown Lunch– which you can visit by clicking on the “Los Angeles” link at the very top of the site.  I know L.A. is far away, and there is potential for jealousy (today I posted about the most amazing Thai food– sorry!) but I hope you’ll follow along anyway.  It’s going to be pretty lonely out there without you guys…

Free Indian Food Alert: Yesterday we told you about 8 cent cake, and 88 cent burgers- today it's free Indian food. Text yourself a coupon for a free combo meal from A Desi Diner (on 31st btw. Mad+5th.) It's just out of bounds, and the coupon is only good through tomorrow, but I figured that you freeloaders would be willing to jump through the hoops!
