PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Janet”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Janet, a PR consultant who loves Asian food and is looking for a good cup of coffee.

Name: Janet

Age: 30

Occupation: PR Consultant

Where in Midtown do you Work?: 7th Avenue between 40th and 41st

Favorite Kind of Food: All Asian – Korean, Thai, Japanese, Sushi, Vietnamese, (more or less anything that involves noodles or rice), Italian, Indian, french fries, pulled BBQ pork sandwiches, any kind of seafood – especially oysters, mussels, lobster and crab!

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Not going to lie – Mexican. I don’t hate it but it’s definitely not my go to choice of cuisine. Also, I don’t really have a sweet tooth so all those cupcake/dessert places…can definitely do without.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Kati Roll (on 39th btw. 5+6th), Woorijip (on 32nd btw. B’way+5th), Duke’s, Cafe Zaiya (on 41st btw. Mad+5th), Hale & Hearty, Lazzara’s Pizza (on 38th btw. 6+7th). I’m originally from Toronto, Canada where the only street food is hot dogs and there are no buffet/salad tables in delis so I’m in love with the abundance of street food options and delis here.

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Duke’s, Subway, Gingers, Metro

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Kati Rolls!!! Minar (on 46th btw. 6+7th), Cafe Zaiya, Margon (on 46th btw. 6+7th), Wafels & Dinges Truck and many more that are still on our list to try…Schnitzel Truck, Jamaican Dutchy (on 51st and 7th), NYC Cravings and must, must try Hing Won (on 48th btw. 5+6th).

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Anywhere in Asia where I can eat copious amounts of street food while drinking copious amounts of Soju and Sake. Pho, Ramen, Korean BBQ – bring it all.

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? Where can I find good coffee? I live downtown so I often go to 9th Street Espresso, Abraco and Gimme! Coffee but I can’t seem to find a decent cup of Joe in Disneyland!!! FYI – Juan Valdez doesn’t count.

Well, I’m not a discerning coffee drinker- but you’re only 12 blocks away from the newly opened Stumptown in the Ace Hotel (which everyone seem to be raving about.)  There’s also Culture Espresso Bar on 38th btw. 5+6th, which serves Intelligentsia coffee.  Anybody else have a suggestion for Janet?  Put it in the comments…

And as always if anybody would like to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email me at zach@midtownlunch.com.

I <3 Gimme from my Ithaca days, just wish the one on Mott had more seating than the lone bench outside. Midtown kind of blows for coffee

  2. try Dunkin Donuts for coffee.

  3. Kinda far from 40th but Zibettos is on 56th &6th.

The Subway mention drops the overall grade from a B- to a C-. Average job. Cool shades, though; and cute eyebrows!

  5. An asian hottie who doesn’t like cupcakes, that’s so hot right now! How’s the coffee at Cafe Reggio?

Joe the Art of Cofee in Grand Central and Macciato on 44th between Lex & 3rd are both pretty good. Zibetto on 6th and 52 is worth the trip as well.

  7. Culture on 38th and 6th:

You could also get on the F train to 57th to Zibetto (I often make the 2-stop trip to go to the Halal Guys, or 1 stop to Hing Won).

  8. loving the eyebrows too! Some creepy dude complimented me on my eye brows as well… do guys notice eyebrows?!?

  9. Tingers

Juan Valdez actually makes decent iced coffee. I’m pretty sure that they use the cold brew method.

  13. Man, you guys. You’ve attacked everyone for their dislikes -Indian, Thai, Chinese…

But none will stick up for the food of my culture!! Fine, be that way….

  14. Is Macaron Cafe still around (7th and 36th)? They always had good coffee. They always had good everything, actually…

BTW, since you mentioned that you frequent Gingers too much…Chef Yu on 8th and 36th is owned by the same people and the food is better. Not stellar Chinese, but better than Gingers IMO.

  15. Joe the Art of Coffee is alright. Too pricey for their size though. Not like it’s WOW. Mud Truck near Astor Place is better.
Dunkin’ Donuts only for convenience but I believe Tim Horton’s has better coffee.
I’m into regular coffee, not any of that fancy nonsense. But if you want a little more dark kick and hate starbucks, I would suggest Peet’s Coffee at ING cafes.

  16. Oh, I also like Chef Yu too. Little too fancy with their decor and everything to be called real chinese food but it’s good stuff. Good drink specials too.

  17. Mama,i did….but the post…disapeared.

It read : Enter stage left; mamacita blowing snot bubbles.

  18. Oh yea, I love mexican food but it’s more like Tex-Mex of what I’m usually eating though. Not real, real authentic Mexican cuisine.

I was gonna say somebody feed her a Choco Taco since she doesn’t like sweets either.

Cupcake Cafe on 9th between 40th and 41st is good.

  20. I’ll take up for Mexican food. If you’re judging by Toronto and NY I bet you’ve had some pretty scarring Mexican experiences. Give it another shot elsewhere, particularly the awesome seafood, and you might find yourself surprised.
