Columbus Day Parade Not Stopping Street Food: During lunch 5th Ave north of 47th street will likely be a complete shitshow, so you'll probably want to check the ML Twitter Tracker before heading out today. As of right now, NYC Cravings is on 51st,  Mexicue is on 55th, Cupcake Stop is on 52nd, and Frites N Meats is on 46th. (Plus we are now tracking the Malaysia Kitchen truck, but they're not in Midtown today.)

Gahm Mi Oak is Back in Action

I walked by Gahm Mi Oak (on 32nd btw. 5th+B’way) yesterday, and noticed that their doors are open and customers were in the dining room. It appears that they’re once again in the good graces of the DOH (after an unpleasant visit last month). Perfect timing, as this fall weather is perfect for Sul Long Tang.

Midtown Cleans Up at the NYC Wine & Food Fest

Biryani Cart

Another fun filled New York City Wine & Food Festival has come and gone, and we were lucky enough to attend the ‘Carts in the Parc’ event, held this past Sunday. Over 15 vendors were present, including Midtown mainstays, Biryani Cart, Eddie’s Pizza Truck, Jamaican Dutchy, Le Gamin, NYC Cravings, Schnitzel & Things, Sweet Streets, Wafels and Dinges, and the Treats Truck.

Flatiron Extra: Choza Taqueria Is Now Open

Normally we save our Flatiron stuff for the last day of the week, but we forgot to post this little bit of news on Friday…

_MG_9654 - Version 2

As excited as I am for the fusiony Asian-Mex of Baorrito, sometimes you want a regular taco. Now we’ve got a place for that in the neighborhood. Choza Taqueria opened up this week, a welcome addition on a pretty dead strip of Madison, near 27th Street. I reported over the summer that Choza Taqueria was coming and watched with interest as Andrea checked out their branch in the Open Air Cafe downtown.

The place looks to still be a work in progress, so I’m going to hold off on a full scale post for a while. In the meantime, check out the menu after the jump.

Mamacita Tries To Go Rogue At The Irish Rogue

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every week our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

The Irish Rogue has been around for a good 7 years now on W 44th Street (btw. 8/9th ave) tucked away on the small unassuming block where Dykes Lumber resides and right next to old Bull Moose. Yet, it wasn’t until both pubs renovated their façade did I really notice the Rogue. The bright blue neon sign caught my eye, and when I saw their happy hour that runs from 11am to 12am I was drawn in like a moth to the flame. It was time for Mamacita to go rogue!!

50% off Vic's Bagel Bar: Have you been curious about the Cold Stone Creamery-esque craziness of Vic's Bagel Bar (on 3rd btw. 36+37th)?  Well here's good motivation to go check it out... use this deal of the day coupon to get $10 worth of food from Vic's, for just $5.

City Sandwich Brings Portuguese Awesomeness to Midtown West

City Sandwich Front

I first got word of a new Portuguese inspired café, unassumingly named “City Sandwich” (on 9th Ave btw 45+46th St) via Eater this week. With the temporary incapacitation of Xie Xie, there is again a sore gap in Hells Kitchen for ethnic sandwiches, so ‘Portuguese sandwiches’ required immediate investigation.

There’s a lot to like about the humble honesty of this place – whether it’s the inviting Ikea-esque décor, their quirky mantra of “No Mayonnaise” (they prefer yogurt), or their kaleidoscopic menu of soups, salads, and 20 different sandwiches, each playfully named after a friend or family member of the Chef/Owner. Lest we not judge a book by its cover, underneath this demure appearance is some serious cooking and ambitious food… well worth traveling a bit out of bounds for.

Miss Softee Celebrates Last Day of the Season With Her Awesome Crumb Cake

photo(4)

Speaking of Softee season coming to an end, it looks like today might be the last day for our good friend Miss Softee.  But to celebrate, she’s baked up some of her famous crumb cake as a special!  If you love coffee cake, this is one special you’re definitely want to get in on. It’s a vanilla chocolate twist with her very own light, fluffy, homemade (yes, homemade) coffee cake. And in case that doesn’t tempt you, Miss Softee comes from some serious crumb cake making folk–her great aunt sold her recipe to a famous baked goods company. She’s planning on parking on 44th and 6th today, but as always you should check @miss_softee or the ML Twitter Tracker for any updates.  And if you mention Midtown Lunch you’ll get $1 off.

Flatiron Lunch: Your First Look at the Newly Open Baorrito

Now that Downtown has its very own section of the site, what are we going to post on Fridays? Answer… how about a column devoted to those lunches just south of the ML boundaries. Every week we post about a lunch in Murray Hill south, Gramercy, Flatiron, and everything in between… or to make it easy: Flatiron Lunch.

_MG_0064 - Version 2

It’s clearly opening season in the Flatiron Lunch boundaries. Every week it seems like we’ve got another new food option. This week, it’s Michael ‘Bao’ Hyunh’s Asian burrito joint Baorrito, which he transformed the Baoguette on 3rd Avenue into just days ago. We’ve talked a lot about the dream of Mexican and Asian foods brought together for a while now, but for one reason or another it hasn’t quite gotten here in New York. Some have come close (Zach still swears by the original Ssam Bar concept!), but nothing has really approached that holy grail… the Kogi BBQ Truck. If anyone is really going to take it there, it might very well be Bao, the maker of the Banh Mi-palooza winning Vietnamese sandwich.

When I read about the opening on Eater and TONY yesterday afternoon, I knew I couldn’t wait for the next lunch time to give it a try. I headed there right after work to see what it was all about.
