Flatiron Lunch: Chinese Mirch’s Lunch Specials Are Surprisingly Good

Now that Downtown has its very own section of the site, what are we going to post on Fridays at 10am? Answer… how about a new column devoted to those lunches just south of the ML boundaries. Every week we’ll post about a lunch in Murray Hill south, Gramercy, Flatiron, and everything in between… or as we’ll call it from now on: Flatiron Lunch.

Chinese food is everywhere in NY. It’s in tourist shops, it’s in generic deli buffets, it’s even kosher. But Indian Chinese food?  Well, that’s completely new to me.  I’ve walked past Chinese Mirch, in the middle of Curry Hill, dozens of times without thinking much of it. It’s actually been mentioned a few times on the site… but it wasn’t until Luncher ‘Steve’ told us recently about their $5.95 lunch special, that I finally made it over there to check it out. I didn’t have very high expectations, but was happily surprised with what we got.

Details on the special and food photos after the jump.

Sapporo Reopens With Redesigned Space And New Dishes

Sapporo 49th St btw. 6th and 7th Aves

Early in June, we mentioned that Sapporo (on 49th btw. 5+6th) would be closed til mid-June. Well, they’re back open- with slightly higher prices and a completely redesigned space.  This is actually the second time in 5 years they’ve done this, but this time the changes are a bit more noticeable… and they’ve added some new lunch specials.  Check out pics of the new digs plus the new lunch specials, after the jump.

Dessert Truck is Back Until October!

It was a sad day for bread pudding fans when the Dessert Truck lost their permit last year, and was forced to stop parking on the streets of Midtown.  Sure, they went on to open DT Works– a brick and mortar dessert shop downtown, but going all the way to the LES for dessert during lunch isn’t realistic for most Midtown Lunchers.  Well, now you don’t have to!  Feast NY reported this morning that the Dessert Truck is returning to the streets this afternoon. According to twitter they got a seasonal permit, allowing them to vend on the streets until October.  Today, they’ll be parked on Astor Place- but here’s hoping they’ll be back in Midtown soon!  We’ve re-added them to the ML Twitter Tracker if you want to keep dibs on their location.

Things We Refuse to Believe: New Shake Shack is Two Weeks Away

Yesterday a worker at the much anticipated Midtown Shake Shack (on 8th Ave. and 44th) told a Lunch’er that they were going to try to open tomorrow. After we posted the tip, Shake Shack added a little note to the menu posted in their window (and told another Lunch’er that it might be next week if they get their permits.)  Two weeks!?!  Come on.  Really?  I guess that would make sense, since the building it’s isn’t scheduled to open until July 13th.  But I think we might walk by tomorrow during lunch… you know… just in case.

Beacon’s Side Door Hot Dogs Are Pretty Damn Filling

beaconSidedoor3

Mr Pink in the study with the candlestick. Actually there was no Mr. Pink in the game of Clue, but there is a Mr. Pink’s hot dog in Beacon’s new Sidedoor that we brought to you yesterday. The Side Door has a burger and hot dog on the menu. You’ve already seen the burger (it’s one that’s been approved by Mamacita), so I went by to check out what this hot dog thing was all about.

QBA Kitchen Looking For a New Spot: The new QBA Cuban Kitchen truck can't park on 48th today, so they're looking for a new spot. Also on the ML Twitter Tracker this AM... 2 Bros. Pizza Trying Out New “Burger Bros” Concept

As if Midtown didn’t already have enough new burger places popping up… yesterday, Lunch’er “Diamondjim” dropped this bomb in the comments re: the newish branch of 2 Bros. Pizza (on 46th btw. 5th+6th):

“Tucked-away signage spotted inside 2 Bros. today:

Burger Bros.
$1.50 burger
$1.75 cheeseburger
$2.75 double cheeseburger
$1.00 fries
$??? milkshake (didn’t remember the price)!!!”

$1 pizza is one thing, but burgers?  We touched based with the owner of 2 Bros. who confirmed the news…

Grace Building Construction Makes Us Sad

A few weeks ago we reported that construction on the Grace Building had completely displaced the vendors parked on that corner. Want to see more photos of the construction? Eater posted some yesterday– although looking at it makes us even more bummed for the Trini Paki Boys Cart, who were forced to move after years of being parking on the south side of 43rd. They’re on the North side of 43rd now (btw 5+6th) so make sure you get out and support!
