Free Burger Alert, BOGO Fancy Lunch: Neither of these spots are Midtown Lunches but free is free right?!  Text the word FLIP2 to #89800 and get a free burger from Flip Burger in Bloomingdales (coupon good until 5/15, while supplies last.)  Also, if you go to Fishtail today with somebody and call them your assistant, you'll get two $24 price fixe lunches for the price of one.  [Wined and Dined; Eater]

New Pizza (& Hot Dog) Spot Coming to 44th Street

IMG00152-20100421-1704

Thanks to Lunch’er “Larry” for passing along this one… looks like Midtown East is getting *another* $1 pizza joint (on the SW corner of 44th and 3rd).  For those who are keeping track, that’s right around the corner from both 99 Cent Fresh Hot Pizza and 99 Cent Fresh Pizza and only 10 blocks away from the other 99 Cent Fresh Pizza opening soon on 34th and 3rd.  We are kind of intrigued by the “hot dog” part of the equation though…  no word on when it’s going to open.

UPDATE: We’re also hearing the 2 Bros on 46th btw. 5+6th will be opening in two weeks.

ML Dilemma: Free Meat… On Salad!: This is a tough one.  We love free stuff... but can't stand salad! What to do?  The newly opened Tri Trip Grill (in the Rock Center Concourse) will give you free meat with the purchase of any salad today.  In related news, Tri Tip Grill and Billy "Mr. Softee" Gunnz have both been added to the ML Twitter Tracker.  Anybody else we're missing?  Send it in.

Flatiron Lunch: Skip the Mac N Cheese, But Go For the Braised Lamb Pizza at Waldy’s

Now that Downtown has its very own section of the site, what are we going to post on Fridays at 10am? Answer… how about a new column devoted to those lunches just south of the ML boundaries. Every week we’ll post about a lunch in Murray Hill south, Gramercy, Flatiron, and everything in between… or as we’ll call it from now on: Flatiron Lunch.

_MG_8615 - Version 2

Hey folks, I’ll be taking over for Jason on the weekly Flatiron Lunch column. I work at the southern end of Midtown, near the Empire State Building and often end up going out of bounds to find something worthwhile to eat. From now on, I’ve got a good excuse to go exploring even more.

When I first started thinking of lunch spots to cover for Flatiron Lunch, Waldy’s (800 6th Ave btwn 27th & 28th) was one of the first to come to mind. I’d tried out their flatbread pizza last summer and had been looking for an excuse to make my way over there again ever since.

Go!Go!Curry Eating Competition Update

Go!Go!Curry’s 2nd Annual Eating Championship has gotten under way and since they didn’t ban professionals from participating it would appear as if once again gastronomic gladiators will bring down some curry catastrophe on the amateurs.  But that shouldn’t discourage you from entering! To try and qualify for the main event (on June 5th) head to Go Go Curry during one of their “qualifying rounds” (there is one tonight at Columbia, or you can go to GGC itself this Sunday from 6-8pm, and then again next Friday from 6-8pm).  The top 5 times will make it to the final.  To see a compete schedule of events, or download the application to compete, go to the Go Go Curry website. (Even if you don’t want to compete it’s worth looking at the application just for the new rules and a reader friendly guide to how to clean your plate- with photos.) Yes boys and girls, this is what your mom means by finishing off your food before you get dessert.

Mr. Softee Deal?: Need an excuse to check out the new beefcake Mister Softee truck (besides his big "gunnz".) He's on 39th & B'way with "$2 cones and $4 shakes and sundaes, when you mention the words midtown lunch." [via Twitter]

At Lunch Now: Early Mobscene at Pizza by Cer Te Has Finally Died Down

Despite an early rush of Midtown Lunch’ers, things have calmed down a bit at the newly opened Pizza by Cer Te (on 56th btw. Park+Lex).  Got the regular slice and the pomodoro baker. Regular slice is AWESOME: slices of mozzarella, sauce is a little sweet, but not annoying so, little basil leaves, chewy crust, and $2.50! Bakers are flat Sicialians with a suce cheese switchup! Yes, cheese below the sauce, call the trend police! I loved every bite!

Early reports have been mostly positive, with the only complaints being about service (it’s their first day) and price (it’s not cheap.)  One important thing to note, just like Cer Te the place is small and there is no seating. Full report coming soon.  See what everybody is saying, and add your own comments, here>>

Gyu Kaku Groupon Fine Print: Were you one of the 3,720 people who purchased the 50% off Groupon for Gyu Kaku last week? The restaurant has hung a note on the door to clarify some of the fine print.

Fried Rice is the Saving Grace at Zengo

Zengo front door, NYC

Here on ML we’re always on the prowl for the best new lunches, so when any new place opens you know we’ll be stalking the lunch menu. So naturally we’ve been following all the talk about Zengo, the fancy pants Asian fusion tapas spot that opened last week (on 3rd Ave. btw. 40+41st). But is there anything for the Midtown Lunch’er? Good news: Yes there is! The bad news? That the news is only good if you’re on the hunt – who isn’t? – for Midtown’s next best place for amazing fried rice. Read more »
