Midtown Lunch

In honor of tax day (that’s today, by the way, for all you procrastinators), there is all sorts of free stuff being given away. The big one is Energy Kitchen, who will once again be giving away free lunch with the purchase of a beverage from Noon to 2pm. You get your choice of a Bison Cheesesteak Wrap, California Wrap or Buffalo Chicken Burger. That’s not the only thing going on though… if you’re looking for something after work, McCormick & Schmick’s is doing $10.40 specials at the bar (and giving out $10.40 gift certificates.)  And finally there’s free drip coffee from Starbucks all day (as long as you bring your own mug), and free mini cupcakes at Cinnabon from 4-6pm 6-8pm.

Today is International Waffle Day and Wafels & Dinges is celebrating. Instead of their traditional hour of free waffles they will be giving away FREE waffles, ALL DAY, but there’s a little bit of a catch…

Thanks to Lunch’er “Gargupie” for reminding us in the forums.  Tomorrow (Tuesday) is free cone day at Ben & Jerry’s!!! From Noon to 8pm, everybody who goes to Ben & Jerry’s will get a free scoop of ice cream… any flavor you want.  Now that the 8th Ave. location is closed, there are only two spots in Midtown left to score this deal:  the Rock Center Concourse, and the Ben & Jerry’s on the 4th floor of Macy’s (they’re not listed on the website, but we called and confirmed- they are participating.)  And don’t be scared off by the long lines.  These guys are pros… they move real fast. Freeloaders engage.

It’s official!  Famous chefs handing out free food from a branded truck is now part of the official PR gimmick handbook.  If you didn’t read about this on Grub Street last week, here’s a friendly little reminder.  Tomorrow (Thursday) Laurent Tourondel (of BLT restaurant fame) will take to the streets in a truck handing out free smoked bacon pizettas, spicy sirloin sliders, Corned beef hash egg sandwiches, and virgin bloody marys. It’s some sort of post-hangover thing sponsored by Tabasco.  The truck will be in Midtown from 7 to 9:30am (on 48th btw. 5+6th) before heading Downtown from Noon to 2pm (on Broadway across from the “charging bull sculpture”).

According to Grub Street, Buttercup Bake Shop (on 2nd btw. 51+52nd) will be giving away free cupcakes tomorrow morning from 9-10am on Vanderbilt and 42nd St. (in front of Grand Central.) Apparently it’s to promote the launch of their new website, and Channel 11 news will be there. But we can’t help but wonder if the location has anything to do with the brand new Magnolia Bakery that just opened in Grand Central? Owner Jennifer Appel (who according to Grub Street will be handing out the cupcakes tomorrow) co-founded Magnolia before leaving in 2000 to open Buttercup in Midtown East. On the other hand- who cares about the why… freeloaders engage.
