Korilla Responds to Accusations of Skimping

For the past few weeks the forums have been abuzz with complaints about Korilla BBQ’s shrinking portions- specifically the filling in the burritos. Last week our Rachel Goldner hit up the truck stuff her face research whether or not the skimping extended to the bowls as well. Case closed, right? Not exactly. Commenters were not satisfied, and on Friday we got this response from Korilla owner Eddie Song…

When news broke out over alleged ‘skimping’ on food blogosphere, naturally, I thought someone on our staff was breaking major health code rules and eating the food as it’s getting made. Ridiculously enough, our work environment is so laid-back that ‘skimping’ would be as hard to enforce as a 11AM opening time, which has yet to happen! (Sorry Terry & friend for [the other] morning).

Nonetheless, we decided to hold our own internal audit independent of Midtown Lunch’s forensic food investigators.

Our initial findings have been very revealing. When questioned regarding the ‘skimping’, a couple of our managers replied, “Some of us are working [at Korilla] because we are addicted” to “So Midtown you’re hungry, HUH??!!” Even more interesting is a rumor of profiling of a special kind. Let’s just say that the Korilla crew wouldn’t know whether you decided to action jackson a membership to Equinox or on the flip-side decided that you needed to squirrel away a few pounds for the winter. The only way is to tell us you need more or less! We have a patent-pending reflect-o-glass on the truck that uses ultraviolet light technology so you can see what goes down. Ask our crew about it!

Best,
Eddie

Well, that settles that! Right?

Really? Even your second apology is pretty lame. You expect the customer to do your job and manage your employees? If i’m paying for a meal I don’t expect to have to police the staff.

  • Even better, now when the staff hear you ask for “more beef,” they’ll know you’re a cheap, whiny ML fatso and will reach under the counter and add some “special beef sauce” to your order.

  • Wow. What an awful initial, and apology. Could it be any less sincere? I agree, the solution is not having to resort to asking for more. We can’t see over the counter to begin with! Also, notice he said “ingredients”, not meat or protein (which is of course what we’re gunning at). The other stuff is good and all, but no one is going to complain about being light on the lettuce!

Kimchi Taco, Big D’s, and BobJo (if they ever make it by me) all the way. KBBQ, we are done and done.

ok wow…I can’t tell if people are intentionally trolling or genuinely obnoxious.

Eddie’s first response was worthy of haterade but come on, since when did the people of midtownlunch become so rude towards food truck operators?

I haven’t been to Korilla in a while so I can’t comment on their portion reductions but the dude apologized and said that they’re working on improving their consistency and if for whatever reason you’re not satisfied with the quantity, you can always request for more.

They’re young and still learning how to run a business, cut them some slack. If that comment was so horrifying that you don’t want to eat there again, it’s probably better off you don’t.

Its just that they are being approached with very real gripes… and considering the premium in the price, its not unreasonable… so instead of the weird, somewhat immature response… and the lackadaisical actions of telling those who want more to just ask for more… they should just say, we hear your concerns… and we will address them appropriately when we figure out what happened… instead they wanted to be hip, and funny and it backfired… it happens… hopefully its a lesson learned, and they’ll actually address the issue… Ive never been, i always wanted to try… ive had kimchi taco and love them… and based off the high price and less food AND that response to the concerns, I have no problem never trying them at all… so yea, its just a turn off… if you want to be taken as serious business people who serve premium product for a premium price, then act like it… if these were real investors looking into a brick and mortar business, is that the type of response youd give to that kind of concern?

  • Bob + JO is cool people. I went there last week, and for 9 bucks, I got a very hearty platter, and b/c they were closing, got a free bowl of noodles with vegetables. That is customer service! I would def. go back! Kimchi taco has also always been generous with the food and cool.

But Korilla–I loved it the most. At it’s best, i think it destroyed ALL of the other Korean trucks. No doubt. The food–both taste and quantity– with the original crew was always on point. I thought it was the best truck in the City hands down–not just best Korean. It’s a shame they couldn’t continue to step up…If they needed to jack prices a buck to keep the huge quantity, I think they should have. Nothing drives me away faster than establishments who, for 1 reason or another, start to reduce portion size.

  • I have yet to try the original Korilla. Only been to the 2nd one and thought the food was just okay then.

All people want is fairness in the portioning.
Not an unreasonable mountain of bulgogi to go into their tacos, burritos, or bowls (Well, maybe I do but not all the time).
Keep it meaty and everyone will keep coming back for more.

  • For those of you looking for hearty tacos, go with Bann Next Door. Last time I went, they gave me more meat than ever and includes chips with an awesome dipping sauce. The only drawback is that you have to assemble the tacos yourself, but that may be a plus, since you get to portion out the meat, rice and sauces the way you want.

I called it VERY early on. You skimp, you cheat, you fail. Your food is unremarkable, the portions are skimpy, and your attitude needs a transplant. Shut it down.
