PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Anna”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Anna, a marketing person looking for some good stuff in the upper east corner of Midtown…

Name: Anna (pronounced Ah-na, please)

Age: 25

Occupation: Marketing

Where in Midtown do you Work?: 55th & 3rd

Favorite Kind of Food: Mostly everything, although I tend to skew towards Asian. Thai, Japanese, and Dim Sum come immediately to mind, but I just love food in all forms. I don’t discriminate.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Olives and peas. That’s pretty much it.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Num Pang (on 41st btw. Lex+3rd) is my new favorite, I’m still working my way through the menu. The Mackerel wins so far, with the peaches a close second. I also enjoy Korilla BBQ for the Wild Child bulgogi bowl (so sad to hear about the TGFTR cheating scandal, you guys are better than that!), Umi Sushi (on 56th btw. 1+2nd) for a 2 or 3 roll combo, A+ Thai or Rain Thai (on 53rd btw. 2+3rd) for their drunken noodle or pad thai lunch specials, pretty much everything at El Rey de Sabor.

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Gourmet 53. We say we go for the salads, but really it’s the free pita chips. I swear they sprinkle crack on those things.

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Most of the above, but I need to shout out to Barros Luco. The day it closed was a very sad day indeed. Num Pang is a good alternative for awesome sandwiches, but it’s a hike from my office.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Shanghai. I’m in love with the city and there’s such an eclectic mix of restaurants and street food.

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? My upper east corner of midtown gets pretty sparse coverage on this site. Are there any secret spots up here that I’m missing?

Got a recommendation for Anna? Put it in the comments. And, as always, if you want to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate) email editor@midtownlunch.com.

Anna – I’m in your corner of Midtown. There’s all sorts of heady spots around here. Every lunch is heaven sent. Go see Radiohead tomorrow.

  • I’m kinda confused…you say you work on 46th and Madison, but you seem to eat in the 50s and 3rd (and describe it as the “upper east corner”). Either you like to take long walks for lunch or someone screwed up (glares at Zach).

Either way, you basically listed all my favorite spots in that area. Hide-chan for ramen is always good. OBAO is a good go-to as well. Bricklane and Amma (Ah-ma) if you like Indian.

  • I work on 55th and 3rd too, and if I told you about the secret spots around here they wouldn’t be secret anymore! B^P

  • I’m also guilty of going to Gourmet wayyy to often.

Schnitz was in our neck of the woods today, catercorner from Uncle Gussy’s (51st and Park)

    2nd the Hide-Chan rec.
Also recommend the hot sandwiches at Silo to switch it up a bit when you get bored of Gourmet.

If you’re in for a really light lunch, you can get some ‘kati’ rolls from Tadka on E53rd.
