Midtown Lunch is Huuuuuge in Canada

The CBC aired a four part documentary called “The Great Food Revolution” last week, and a small part of it was dedicated to food blogging.  They asked me to take them to some of my favorite Midtown Lunch spots, so a few months ago a camera followed me to Margon, Minar, Cafe Zaiya, and the Biryani Cart.  I wasn’t going to be post the video (I am embarrassingly goofy looking *and* sounding) but I feel bad not letting the infamous Midtown Lunch Commenters see me discuss how scared they make me.  Plus all those who were disappointed that I didn’t look fatter in the VendrTV video, you’ll be happy to know I look much heftier in this one.

Video is after the jump…

Magdy’s Cart Makes Me Wonder: What the Hell is Chicken Scampi?

DSC01542

I was on the prowl for some street meat yesterday (thanks to everyone for twittering their recommendations @midtowlunch) when I noticed this sign on the Magdy’s Philly Cheesesteak Cart (on Park Ave & 46th St.) I’m sure it’s always been there, but Magdy’s is known for their philly cheesesteaks… and I just never noticed it before.

Scampi means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. To my mom it meant breaded shrimp baked in a pyrex dish covered in Pam cooking spray. At most Italian restaurants it involves shrimp, butter, garlic, and white wine. In England it’s fried lobster! I was super curious what it meant to a cheese-steak cart in Midtown.

6th Ave. is Gearing Up for a Bulgogi Cart War

DSC01551

Got this email about the new “Happy Well Being House” cart (on 50th btw. 6+7th):

“Just wanted to let you know that the new cart on 50th & 6th is now serving bulgogi. You get TONS of bulgogi with rice and salad for $6!!! But I dunno, maybe I just got a lot b/c I’m Korean… and good looking.”

With the O.G. Bulgogi Cart one block away (on 49th btw. 6+7th) things could start to get interesting. I know when a new halal stand tries to set up near a halal stand that has been in a spot for a long time, things can get really ugly, really quickly. I wonder if Korean carts follow the same code of honor…

Margon Does Us Proud at Choice Eats (Again)

DSC01580

For the second year in a row Midtown lunching was woefully underrepresented at Choice Eats, but Margon-the Cuban/Dominican diner on 46th btw. 6+7th- did us proud with a huge spread of some of their best stuff.

Correction: Pizza Rustica To Return on Friday: You had to be quick to score some of Papa Perrone's pizza rustica yesterday (on 55th btw. Mad+Park), they were all sold out by 1:15pm. The truck is off today (and tomorrow), but they'll be back tomorrow (Thursday) Friday with more of the Easter treat.
