Arang Korean/Sushi Buffet

I just wanted to say a quick thank you for all the emails I’ve gotten, many of them with some great suggestions.  A lot of those suggestions urge me to branch out farther and farther from the places I have already reviewed.  9th avenue, the high 30s, Koreatown.  Someone even suggested I go to Chinatown if I wanted “real authentic Chinese food“.  Apparently she didn’t fully grasp the meaning of my blog’s very complex title.  It is very confusing…

I kid, I kid.  Although every day I struggle with where to draw the boundaries with this blog.  I could say 8th ave. on the west, and 42nd St. to the south.  But what if there’s a great place to eat on 41st.  Am I really not going to walk the extra block?  So the truth is, I’m not going to set any boundaries.  And the reason is simple…  No boundaries means I have an excuse to go all the way down to 32nd st. in Koreantown to write about my favorite all you can eat buffet… Arang.

One of my favorite styles of eating is the all you can eat buffet.  The variety, the concept, the trying to beat the game by pushing your personal eating limits as far as they can go.  What’s there not to like?  (Besides how you feel afterwards).  And nothing is going to get me to travel 16 blocks away from work like a $9.95 face stuffing Korean and Sushi extravaganza.  Which is precisely what you get at Arang.

For those who work on the southern part of Midtown 32nd St. btw. Broadway and 5th Ave. is no big deal.  But for those of us a little farther north, here’s the way I see it.  There’s no ordering, and you start eating immediately… so- 20 minutes down, 20 minutes to eat, and 20 minutes back.  It’s a full proof scheme.

Arang is what I refer to as a “small scale” buffet.  Don’t expect Minado (the gigantic Japanese buffet on 32nd btw. 5+Madison, which sadely has been bought out by Todai) or some sort of Super Buffet.  This is one of those small places with fewer items… but because it is small- you hope the few things they do have are done well.

What they have, the pictures and +/- after the jump… Read more »

End of the Week Wrap Up… plus New Features!

So I guess the Starbucks at Rock Center was the place to be yesterday… Underground (where it’s cooler), totally inside (so you’re not sweating your ass off) and relatively un-crowded for the Free Starbucks.  Not the one near the subway though:

Those people were morons.  They couldn’t make their way 100 yards to the Starbucks near the Rink Cafe where there was no more then a 5 minute wait for the first half hour of the promotion:

Of course all of the people in these pictures were smarter then anyone who actually ventured out into the disgusting heat for their free Iced Coffee.  Not worth it…

Anyway, I’ve added two new features to the blog.  The first is an Index of Restaurants so you can see all the places that have been reviewed.  It’s organized by food type, and I think it will make it easier to find a place to eat than clicking on a category and scrolling through all the postings.  I know it sort of goes against what blogging is all about- but whatever.  If it makes it easier for you… (after all that is what I’m here for)

The second feature I’ve added appears on the bottom of the right hand side bar, and allows you to chat online with me if I’m logged on.  I don’t know why the hell you would ever want to IM with me (as it is I’m surprised so many of you even read this stupid blog)- but it’s a cool new widget, and I’m all about adding meaningless junk to my sidebars.  It’s a beta so I’m sure it won’t work, I’ll get frustrated with it and it will be gone by next week… but for now it’s there if you feel like telling me how amazing I am for creating a place where we can all share in the pain of eating lunch in Midtown.  I had a feeling Meebo would give out on me (of course I wasn’t counting on all the traffic from the piece in Metro this morning!) so I’m shutting it off for the rest of the day.  Feel free to email me at zach@midtownlunch.com or just use the comment fields.  Poor Meebo.  Why Metro, Why???

Check back next week and learn about the hidden Cosi… plus I’ll venture all the way to Koreatown, for the only thing that could get me to go 16 blocks away from my office for lunch… A BUFFET!  Have a nice weekend…

Free Iced Coffee from Starbucks Today (8/3) 1-3pm

Oh my lord it’s freakin hot… so what better way to spend your lunch time then sitting in line for a free coffee (hope the line is long enough that you have to wait outside).  Thanks to TribecaGirl and Gothamist for letting us know about this fabulous way to waste our lunch hour.

“Free iced coffee and iced cafe con leche at participating locations from 1-3 pm today. The standard rules apply: “Valid for one drink per customer. While supplies last.”

Whatever that means… they never seem to run out when you’re paying $5 for your fancy coffee.

I’ve already confirmed that the Starbucks on 51st. & 6th Ave. in the building on 51st btw. 51st & 52nd. (1290 6th Ave.) is participating.  But the place to be is definetely Rockefeller Center.  The one in the concourse (next to the Rink Bar- not close to the subway) was only a 2-5 minute wait.  For a list of Midtown area Starbucks locations click here.

Korean Food at Cafe Duke

If you read this blog every day, I’m sure you get the general idea of my taste.  I’m not really into those delis that litter midtown with their “choice”.  Choice to me is
“Do I get my combo with the pork fried rice, or lo mein?”.  I consider most sandwiches kind of boring, and I never imagined I could eat a salad for lunch.  That is, until I met the Variety Cafe… and I let my guard down.  I allowed myself to fall in love with this Variety Cafe place, and their wonderful salad bar for fat people… only to have my heart ripped in half by their disregard for serving said salad without rodent droppings.

“I’ll never eat at a deli/salad bar place again” I said to myself (I use slashes when I talk- that’s pronounced “deli slash salad bar”), that is, until I found Cafe Duke.  From the outside it looks like your typical Manhattan lunch place.  The name, the decor, the salad bar, buffet by the pound, rotisserie bar, sandwiches and paninis, wraps and of course the sushi bar.  But, hidden in the back left hand corner is the real gem of the place… The Korean Food station!

That’s right, Bi Bim Bap, Bulgogi and Korean soup, being served in the back of a Midtown deli.  Bastards!  I can feel myself falling in love all over again…

The food porn, and +/- after the jump… Continue to the rest of the post…

Rangole Indian Buffet

******UPDATE:   THIS RESTAURANT IS NOW CLOSED******

Who says you can’t eat Indian food when it’s 97 degrees and disgusting out?  It’s 92 degrees at Indira Ghandi National Airport in India today.  Where do you think they’re eating?  At a deli/salad bar? (Do they have Metro in India?)  If they can eat Indian food in that kind of heat, so can I- and isn’t there something about spicy food helping you cool down by making you sweat?  I’m not even going to look that one up… just going to assume it’s true.

If there is one thing there’s plenty of in Midtown- it’s Indian Restaurants.  Cheap, expensive, eat in or take out…  And, most of the nice, expensive Indian Restaurants choose to do buffets at lunch ranging in price (usually $10.95 and up).  I’ve gotten a lot of emails asking me to write about some of the Indian Buffets in Midtown- so I’ve decided to start with the cheapest one I know of- Rangole.

Let me start of by saying, it’s not the best Indian food in Midtown, and it’s not even the best buffet… but there’s one thing you can’t argue about- if you like Buffets (and I do) this one is cheap, and for the price it’s totally worth it.

What they serve, some more pictures, and the +/- after the jump… Read more »

Hallo Berlin Cart… back in business!

For German sausage freaks, July 2006 was a terrible month.  Not only did you have to watch your Football (aka Soccer) team lose in the Semi-Finals of the World Cup in their home country- but you had to suffer the indignity of not being able to drown your sorrows in a delicious bratwurst during lunch time.

Well, there’s good news.  As of yesterday, the Hallo Berlin Cart is back and operating at it’s usual spot on 54th st. & 5th Ave.  Back from their annual July trip to Germany, the Babiel Brothers’ cart is back open (as usual) from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm and serving up the best German sausage Midtown has to offer.  Choose from 10 different kinds of sausages, in all sorts of different combos.

Our favorites (for no other reason then our love for the pictures of Kennedy & Mao Zedong): The Dictator or Democracy Special.  Dictator special… you get no choice.  One Berliner frank, one bratwurst.  Topped with German fries, cabbage, onions and crusty bread for 6 bucks.  The Democracy Special…  your choice (obviously) of any two wurst, covered in German fries, cabbage, onions and 2 pieces of Bavarian meatballs.  Served with crusty bread for $8.

I’ll save my review of the cart, and the +/- for another time…  see you on line this afternoon!  After all, what could be better then eating sausage, outside in 97 degree heat!
