Old City Flatbreads from Silence Dogood’s

photo via Facebook

Unfortunately, I find myself assuming restaurants on Market Street in Old City are guilty (of being lame) before proven innocent. Something about the cheesiness of being ushered in along with a few underwhelming experiences. Silence Dogood opened on Market Street in April without much fanfare/press and I was of course, skeptical. The pub is also associated with the Big Red Pedal Tours- that bike powered roving bar that I have never known anyone to use.  But while ordering a flew of flat breads for my group, I was told they make their own ricotta and my hope rose like dough.

I Ate all the Creamed Chipped Beef at Mrs. K’s Koffee Shop

While new “hot” restaurants are a constant in all parts of Philly, Mrs. K’s Coffee Shop has been truckin in Old City since the 60’s, according to the menu, and is as not “hot” as it gets, according to my eyes.

AYCE Pork Tonight?

While 5pm isn’t technically lunch, this deal is too good to not share. Tonight, and every Monday this summer from 5pm on, Cuba Libre is hosting a $25 all you can eat pig roast featuring a huge piggy slow roasting all day on the streets of Old City in the “Caja China.” I was invited for a porky preview.

Hand Pumped Donuts and Sustainable T-Shirts

United by Blue is a unique clothing shop in Old City that I only just came across, though they opened in the Fall of 2013. They clean up one pound of trash from the ocean for every product sold. Plus their goods are mostly made of sustainable and organic materials. The product tags are even made out of elephant poop. Pretty cool, but why does Midtown Lunch care? Oh, because they also have a cafe inside. The menu has healthy things, naturally, like salads and wraps, plus an intense coffee and tea menu. Most importantly, for my purposes, are the HAND PUMPED to order donuts.

So some local foozball player opened an American bistro in Old City last Spring (obviously I am an avid sports fan). Its a pretty straight forward menu with a solid cocktail list. They are open for lunch/brunch Wednesday through Sunday.

Much Loaf Love for High Street on Market

High Street on Market is the new darling of Old City and for good reason. Though Chef Eli Culp teased us with sandwich making in action Vines, the lunch staple formerly known as Fork etc transitioned quickly to High Street and continued providing baked goods and lunch to the neighborhood. Take out and dine in are both still possible. The main difference, besides the newly developed dinner menu, is that everything has been slightly elevated while maintaining a reasonable price point. And though the name might suggest a menu of pizza topped with Funions and Twinkies dipped in Nutella, its more of a place you can use to casually impress an out of town relative  than a stoner’s retreat.

All of the Things in Campo’s “The Stockyard” Sandwich

Campo’s is a sandwich shop in Old City with a huge variety of sandwiches, including some allegedly decent cheesesteaks. I don’t know if its just me, but some days I like to gross myself out by ordering a meal I really shouldn’t. It just feels right to pick out something a cardiologist would be disgusted with. Usually this happens after a night of drinking or a night of having salad for dinner. Luckily, Campo’s make it easy.
