Jets Tight End Eats Terrible Midtown Hot Dog

This Hot Dog Crawl by Jets Tight End Dustin Keller caught our eye recently. It started with a terrible snap-less wiener at a “hot dog stand on the corner of 39th and 8th called Sabrett” before moving on to Nathan’s and then Hallo Berlin (?) which is strange since they’ve been M.I.A. for months.  Excited by the report we rushed over to 54th and 5th today, but no Hallo Berlin.  Maybe this food tour was done last year?   Who knows… but we’re still holding out hope that the famous sausage cart is not gone forever.

Eating General Tso’s From a Souvenir Shop

hidden-chinese-restaurant

If I say 5th Avenue Empire Cafe… you say… wha?! Exactly. Where is that? You could walk up and down fifth avenue and never see this restaurant. They have a banner outside on the sidewalk but it fails to mention the name. What’s more strange and awesome about this place (and certainly has contributed to its anonymity) is that it’s in a place where most Midtown Lunchers would never visit… a touristy souvenir shop. Beneath the shadows of the Empire State Building on 5th Ave btw. 33+34th, sits a little souvenir store that would be like any other… except they have a restaurant on the second floor. Of course, it’s a Chinese restaurant. With bubble tea! And General Tso’s chicken…

“Green Taste Truck” Hits the Streets

If you like Kosher food, but want to be healthy (?) you’ll be interested in this news from Lunch’er Adam. He spotted this truck on 48th and 6th yesterday. Unsurprisingly the website painted on the truck doesn’t work, and we can’t imagine they’ll be able to keep parking on 48th and 6th every single day. We’ll see if they’re back today… early (Kosher?) adopters, let us know how it is in the comments.

Crisp Introduces New Asian Falafel

Crisp, the unique falafel spot with two locations in Midtown, has introduced a new sandwich called the “Crisp Asia”.   It’s falafel plus Asian chili sauce, japanese eggplants, alfalfa sprouts, mandarin oranges, and greens- and it replaced the “American” on Crisp’s menu. So now Mexico, Africa, Paris, and Greece are all represented (and of course there was the incredibly brief, but much loved, “Taj” from India.)   It’s been awhile since they created a new sandwich so this is pretty exciting news.  Plus if you mention “V.I.P.” you get 20% off.

4Food is More Insane Than We Ever Imagined: Remember 4Food, the crazy-ass new stuff-a-hole-in-the-middle-of-your-hamburger-with-weird-shit chain that's supposedly opening June 1st on 40th & Madison.  Eater has ton more info about the place, and it is stranger than we ever could have imagined. (Spoiler: A 4Food rep called it "an Apple store meets a Chipotle".  Oh Boy.)

Totto Ramen is Opening June 3rd (But Not Where You Think)

It looks Totto Ramen, the new soup offshoot of the hugely popular Yakitori Totto (on 55th btw. B’way+8th), will not be taking over the Bombay Eats space after all. From Lunch’er Steve:

Just walked down 52nd on my way to the Amish Market and saw this sign up on a window. I remember you guys talking about a new Ramen shop that was going to take over the Bombay Eats spot but it looks like maybe it is taking this spot? Its located on 52nd btwn 8th and 9th, right next to Lucky Burger. Inside they had a long wooden bar (similar to Momo Ko) set up but the rest looked like it was still being worked on. Sign outside is up so it can’t be THAT long until we finally have a decent midtown west ramen spot… hopefully.

According to their new website, June 3rd is the grand opening date. Should be good… thanks for the great news Steve.

Hip New Bar Snack?: Chris6Sigma has posted his shocking experience at the East Side Social Club (on 51st & 3rd) which included a spotting of multiple cockroaches in the bar area and a nonchalant bartender. Seems unfair that the DOH is shutting down spots with electrical issues or lack of a door when there's bigger offenders out there." This bar in now officially off my happy hour list!

99% Vegetarian Cart Spotted Downtown: Speaking of Street Meat (or... uh... street meat-less?) the 100% 99% Vegetarian Cart that disappeared from 52nd and 6th Ave. has popped up in the Financial District. I guess the hot dog vendors finally got to be too much for them.  Sound familiar?
