Midtown Happy Hour: Brickyard Gastropub Sports Some Above Average Pub Fare

Truffles – not your typical Midtown Lunch focus; but for this review, truffles are my star…well, truffle fries anyway. And Brickyard’s White Truffle Frites were so good, my fellow happy hour-ers and I ate every little crumb.  Check them out after the jump…

A Look at Two of STK OUT’s Sandwiches (And Sweet Potater Tots!)

When STK OUT opened this week in the Grace Building Plaza on 43rd and 6th, we were pleasantly surprised to find the menu items were mostly within the ML price range. The menu is divided into cutesy sections like “sammies” and “bevies,” but we won’t hold that against them, because the food has been pretty solid so far.

Flatiron Lunch: Big Booty Bread Co. Delivers on the Latin Baked Goods

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

When you pass a place called Big Booty Bread Co., you should ask yourself, “Self, how can I not go in?” When I passed Big Booty Bread Co., I asked myself that same question and had no good answer, so I had to go check it out. [Insert obligatory Sir Mix-A-Lot joke here]

Last Day for Certe’s ‘Spring Ahead’ Specials: Just a friendly reminder... today is the last day to get your hands on Certe's 'Spring Ahead Sandwich' and Pizza by Certe's 'Spring Ahead Pizza.' I really enjoyed the pizza a few weeks ago, and Serious Eats had nothing but nice things to say about the sandwich. Next week, it's out with the old, in with the new...can't wait to get our hands on the April special!

Contributor Stalking (The “Colombian Snack Time” Edition)

Do you wonder what the ML contributors do when they’re not eating lunch in Midtown? (We’re actually pretty easy to stalk!)

Colombian Snack time
A meaty snack plate in Colombia. Photo by Brownie.

Brian had a weird ribeye at Isa, Donny checked out Umamicatessan in Los Angeles, Blondie obsessed over the PB & Jam doughnut at Bowery Diner, Brownie reminisced about Colombian chicharrones, Chris enjoyed the cocktails and finger foods at Low Country and I took photos in the kitchen at Giano in the East Village.

Elsewhere in the ML universe… Andrea speculated about an upcoming Tribeca food hall, Jamie explored the options at a Vietnamese tofu shop in Philly and Zach rejoiced about a Filipino Barbecue joint in Downtown LA.

Free Frozen Treats Alert: STK OUT opened yesterday but is hosting their launch event -- complete with a DJ -- today on 43rd and 6th avenue in their new Grace Building Plaza location (let me assure you, you'll definitely hear it before you see it). Models on roller skates are handing out frozen treats to the crowd until 3:30, so if you're in the area, you might want to swing by for some free eats!

Pizza Wars Push Slice Price to 75 Cents on 6th Ave

As much as we love a deal here at Midtown Lunch, the trend of cheap pizza has been a little bizarre to watch. Last fall, 2 Bros. popped up just doors away from Indian Newsstand (and pizza joint) Bombay and a price war ensued. Early this week, luncher ‘jonhack’ posted in the forums that Pizza King, Bombay’s pizza joint, was selling slices for 79 cents and that 2 Bros had responded by knocking their price down to 75 cents. As you can see from the photo above, it looks like Pizza King has matched their price. How far will this pizza brinksmanship go?!? Are we looking at 50 cent slices soon? Only time will tell.

Pure Thai Has New Name But Still Great Food

We haven’t check in with Pure Thai (the winner of ML’s Reader’s Poll last year for Best Thai) since they were forced to change their name from Pure Thai Shophouse to Pure Thai Cookhouse. It’s been a favorite of Chris H.’s for a while now and I decided it was finally time to make the pilgrimage to Ninth Avenue for myself.  I came with a few friends so we were able to order more food and stay within our budgets. We started with two appetizers – both on their own are within ML price limit, but neither are large enough for a full meal.
