Comme Ci Comme Ça Truck’s Chicken Over Rice is Great

DSC00145

Several months ago, I reported seeing that the Comme Ci Comme Ça Truck had added over rice specials to their Mediterranean influenced Moroccan menu. I’ve been a fan of their chicken couscous, but on a recent trip I noticed that all five of the people in front of me ordered chicken over rice and I had to see how they’d pull off this midtown lunch staple. Rock Center Also Getting a Potbelly Sandwich Shop

Potbelly sandwich shop

Looks like Downtown isn’t the only area getting a Potbelly Sandwich Shop. A recent walk down to the Rock Center Concourse revealed that another location of the Chicago based chain should be “coming soonish.” Chicagoans, should we be excited or is this just another Subway substitute? (Sorry, couldn’t resist!)

Flatiron Lunch Outdoor Eats Edition: Madison Sq Market, Calexico, BeerParc, Food Truck Frenzy

Every Friday our man UltraClay goes south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

It’s a Cupcake Kind of Friday

Japan cupcake

Cupcake haters best start scrolling now because there’s serious cupcake action happening in midtown today. Sprinkles, the LA cupcakery that’s about to invade NYC is planning on giving away cupcakes in Times Square (yeah, good luck with that). Follow them @sprinklesmobile for details on when/where the giveaway is going down. Yesterday, they ran out of 1000 cupcakes in under an hour. Elsewhere in midtown Robicelli’s has their once- a-year Mint Julep cupcakes (hello, bourbon-mint cake & buttercream with hand candied mint leaf). You can snag some for Derby day at Schnitzel & Things (3rd Ave. btw. 45+46th). Lastly, Magnolia is currently offering “the Japan cupcake,” (chocolate cake, vanilla frosting with a raspberry “to signify the ‘rising sun’ symbol known as the Nisshoki.”) These cupcakes are $3 and $1 goes to the Japan Society’s earthquake fund (regular cupcakes are $2.75). Available at both the Rock Center and Grand Central locations.

Would You Like A Margarita With That?

If our favorite Mexican dishes were not enough for you, there are always happy hour specials tonight to fill the void. Almost every bar will have some drink specials but here are two that caught my eye.

Wharf Bar will have a large list of Mexican food and drink specials all night, but I’d head straight for their fish tacos. As close to Baja on a budget as you can get in Manhattan, their battered and fried fish fillets wrapped in a steamy corn tortilla and topped with cheese, pico de gallo, and tomatillo salsa really hit the spot during happy hour.Want to avoid the drunken crowds today? Just visit on any Wednesday for $1 chicken, beef or fish tacos from 4pm-2am with $3 shot specials.

Over on the Westside, Blue Ruin will have $2 tequila shots, plus free chips & salsa. Owner Michelle promises not to slap anyone who asks for a margarita during happy hour. Ain’t she sweet.  ¡Salud!

Rickshaw Dumpling to Open Midtown Storefront

From storefront to food truck and back again, it looks like Rickshaw Dumpling’s business is strong enough in Midtown to do this… Lunch’er Epcol spotted this on Lexington and 45th. No word on when it will open or what this means for their Midtown truck schedule.

Our Favorite Mexican Dishes in Midtown

Not exactly sure how Cinco de Mayo went from “commemoration of Mexico’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla” to “excuse to drink massive amounts of alcohol and act like an idiot”, but it’s an annual tradition here on ML to use the holiday as an excuse to eat Mexican food (not that we need any excuse!)  So in honor of it being May 5th, we decided to post a round up of all our contributor’s favorite Mexican dishes…

Torta de Pollo @ Tehuitzingo

Chris H: The Torta de Pollo at Tehuitzingo Deli and Grocery

When I think Mexican food, I think bold, pure flavors, and I think value for money.  Nothing captures those principles like the *Torta de Pollo* at Tehuitzingo, which is simply *¡Que rico! – *a nearly perfect balance of boldly seasoned chicken, assertive spice, crusty bread, and that lovely creamy queso blanco to mellow and bind all the components.  And at $6, it’s more enough food for the average luncher, although heartier eaters could add one of their excellent tacos and still remain under $10.  Yes, it’s a hike to 10th Avenue, but it’s a journey worth making.*  *And for the lazy/time pressed office worker?  They deliver as far east as 6th Ave.  695 10th Ave(between 47th St & 48th St); 212-397-5956
