Schnipper’s Quality Kitchen Snips Breakfast

Schnippers Breakfast 86

I happened to walk by Schnipper’s Quality Kitchen last night, and noticed that they posted a sign stating that they’ve shut down their breakfast service. This is a darn shame, for as much as we’ve enjoyed their burgers; we’ve never had a chance to try their breakfast offerings. I guess we’ll have to stick with Tri Tip Grill or ‘wichcraft for gourmet breakfasts.

People Complained About Food Trucks in 1907

Thanks to Lunch’er Copyboy for sending along this great old photo of Herald Square:

A photo of Herald Square back when the New York Herald was still there. I didn’t know about this ornate building, complete with green-glowing-eyed owls on the pediment. More to the point, if you look next to the curb in the center-right, you’ll see “Lunch Wagon No. 9” – 1908’s version of a food cart. (close up attached) I wonder what they served? Some things never change: attached also here is a letter from 1907 complaining about a lunch cart at 6th Ave and 35th st. – apparently the very one in the photo.

Check out the letter after the jump…

The Counter is For People Who Think Toppings Make the Burger

The Counter

The Counter, a burger restaurant from SoCal, opened right smack in the center of Times Square back in December. Our very own Zach gave us a sneak peek of what we would be expecting from The Counter in LA. In his write-up he got 2 burgers where 1 of them he went crazytown with (roasted green chilies, grilled pineapple and onion strings?!) But how does the NYC version stack up- especially considering its Times Square location (surrounded by a whole host of TGIF type of restaurants.)

Are Soup Dumplings the Only Good Thing About Joe’s Shanghai?

Joe's Shanghai

For some random reason I was craving twice or double cooked pork last week (hmmmmm… pork belly.) The obvious choice seemed to be the version from Szechuan Gourmet (we do love us some Szechuan Gourmet around here), but what about Joe’s Shanghai? It’s pretty much an institution in Chinatown, but has only been mentioned on Midtown Lunch once. So to give it some love I decided to check it out.

New Knick Inspires Carnegie Deli: That didn't take long! Yesterday Gothamist reported that the Carnegie Deli has created a "Melo Sandwich", inspired by the newest member of the Knicks, Carmelo Anthony. For $21.95 you get "pastrami, corned beef, salami, bacon, tomato, and Russian dressing on rye." Just looking at the photo is making me very hungry and very afraid. (Hopefully this one will last longer than the Lebron sandwich.)

Salt & Pepper To Reopen in Old Hickey’s Space

This really sad article about the passing of Hickey’s owner Jim Hickey yielded some happier news for Salt and Pepper fans.  (Apparently our report of its closing was a bit premature.) According to the article the temporarily closed restaurant will be taking over the old Hickey’s space (on 33rd btw. 6+7th) and reopen on March 1st “with burgers and pizza added to its eclectic mix of Spanish, American, Pakistani and Indian food.”

Arang Now Serving “Chicken Asshole House”

Posted to the Midtown Lunch Flickr Photo Pool by Pabo76:

Chicken Asshole House + Soju

Passed by Arang today and noticed their new Happy Hour specials, which include a delicious dish of “Chicken Asshole House + Soju,” for $25. Actually the Korean name of the dish “Dak Dhong Chip BokKum” literally translates to “Fried Chicken Shit House,” which is perhaps even worse. However, I’m sure they really meant to say “Fried Chicken Gizzards.”

Personally I’ve never been too big a fan of the dish myself, despite the fact that my mother and others have always told me that the “Dhong Chip” was the best the part of the chicken. It certainly won’t kill you, and after enough soju you’ll never know the difference anyway. Besides, it tastes just like chicken.

Arang, 9 W 32nd St. (btw. B’way+5th)

Ippudo Coming to Midtown West!?: Just when you thought the Midtown ramen scene couldn't get any bigger, Eater goes and drops this bombshell. Ippudo, the famed ramenya whose East Village location is constantly mobbed, has plans to open a second NYC location somewhere in Midtown West.  Hide ChanTotto Ramen?  The gauntlet has been thrown.
