ML Forums: Cameras, Jamaican Cart, Sriphaphai

Free Chocolate Alert: According to the Wandering Eater La Masion du Chocolat (in Rock Center) will be giving away free chocolate ganaches tomorrow (Thursday) from 6pm to 11pm.  Freeloaders engage. UPDATE: They are now saying it won't start until 7pm.  (Booooo!)

Local News Discovers The “Food Cart Wars”

Following in the Post’s footsteps (who published a story yesterday about “Plantergate”), local news stations WPIX and CBS2 become the latest “real” media outlet to use Midtown Lunch as a source for their stories.  WPIX interviewed a “gee-roh” vendor on 52nd & 7th, while CBS2 hit up the Kosher Oasis cart, and both talked to Edgar from the El “Rydell” Sabor cart. Neither station seems to realize these fights have been going on for decades, but their enthusiasm is infectious. And, just like the reporter from PIX said… I can’t wait to see “what happens over the next couple of weeks!”

Check out the two videos after the jump…

El Ranchito del Agave Proves My Buffet Standards Are Higher Than I Thought

El Ranchito del Agave

Knowing how much I love the all-you-can-eat buffet, Serious Eats grand poobah Ed Levine IM’d pretty soon after he and the SENY crew discovered El Ranchito del Agave- the brand new Mexican restaurant on 9th Ave. btw. 36+37th that features a lunch buffet.  He knew I’d be excited (I’m very serious about my all you can eat buffets), but cautioned that he might have finally found an all you can eat buffet that even I couldn’t get behind 100%.  Ed found the taquitos to be dry, and the mole too sweet- but the rest of the crew seemed to like it enough in their review… and it’s only $8!  How could it be bad!? (After all you are talking to a guy who has willingly eaten at an all you can eat Chinese buffet in the back woods of Tennessee.)

What I’m trying to say is my standards for all you can eat buffets are far lower than Ed’s, so I rushed out 9th to check this one out.

Kosher Shmosher: From Lunch'er "Pigiron": "Doesn't Goodburger realize that a veggie burger cooked in the same kitchen that makes cheeseburgers and milkshakes cannot possibly be Kosher?" Uh... apparently they don't.

Don’t Mess With the Panini Tozt

DSC04144

I’ve walked by the strangeness that is Panini Tozt (on 50th btw. Mad+Park) so many times, but have never quite been interested enough to pull the trigger. After this email from Lunch’er Emily, I’m thinking that might have been a mistake.

I’ve been a longtime reader of Midtown Lunch, so I feel pretty confident you haven’t written about this newsstand that serves lunch well within ML’s price parameters, on 50th between Madison and Park. It’s called Panna Tozt, “European-style sandwiches,” or something like that. And yes, it’s in a real-deal newsstand. I went for the first time today and not only am I writing you mere seconds after I finished wolfing down my Cuban sandwich…but I don’t even have a picture to show you, because I ate it so fast. Yeah, it was that good.

They have a standard menu of combos to choose from – which they throw on the panini press for you, and THEN they take it off and ask you what you want to add. (I like this – my lettuce doesn’t get weird and wilted and hot from being grilled.) And you can add anything – even fries!

Been Caught Shilling: Midtown Lunch oldie but goodie Bread & Olive (on 45th btw. 5+6th) was called out on Eater yesterday for posting a possible shill to Menupages.  Feel free to get excited about their labne all you want- but "favorite mid-town lunch of all time" and "heavenly"?  Let's not get crazy. Schnitzel & Things Refuses to Serve Bad Wiener Schnitzel

Schnitzel & Things Truck

According to a comment posted yesterday by Lunch’er “Multisync”, the Schnitzel & Things Truck didn’t have the wiener schnitzel they had promised on Twitter yesterday– but there’s a pretty good explanation for it. I got this message yesterday from the truck’s owner Oleg:

“We were very excited to finally bring Wiener Schnitzel for the rest of the week. But when we got our delivery of veal right before lunch service, we decided against serving it because it just wasn’t up to standard. We only want to serve meat that we can be proud of, and unfortunately that wasn’t the case this morning. The butcher has already apologized profusely, and will try to get us a fresh batch of veal for the rest of the week. We’re sorry but it wasn’t in our control. What was in our control, was the decision to serve it or not, and we decided against it! We promise to have it as soon as we can. We hope that ML’ers will understand!”

Completely Didn’t Notice That Masculine Salad: Totally missed this one when we posted about Schnitzel Express opening last week (on 39th btw. B'way+6th): according to Grub Street their menu touts a "'masculine salad' made with 'masculine lettuce.'" [Grub Street]

Crisp Says “Only Bitches Use Coupons”

crisp_bogo

Apparently Crisp (the great falafel place with two locations in Midtown) doesn’t think much about people who use their Buy One Get One Free (BOGO) coupons. Lunch’er “David” forwarded us this receipt, which makes it pretty clear what they think about freeloaders!
