Dominican Plates from Parada Maimon

Did you miss me? I just spend the past few days in San Antonio, visiting a friend and eating bbq and kolaches, but I am back to share this new place that is bringing us Dominican food without the visit North Philly.  Parada Maimon opened a few months ago in the Callowhill area (right above Chinatown)- serving Dominican food in a festive setting. All of the unexpected wood reminded me of Uncle’s Backyard last weekend. And according to my Dominican friend, the paintings on the wall are exactly what you would find at a home in the D.R (something about a child picking at her feet in a field).

Nanee’s Kitchen Chicken Samosas

Nanee’s Kitchen is a stall in Reading Terminal that I have overlooked. (I believe they changed stalls-  I recall a seafood stand being in this place a while back) I don’t usually visit the Terminal for Indian or Pakistani food. But, walking by en route to pick up produce, I noticed the chicken samosas- just the little snack I needed.

A Georgian Calzone from Uncle’s Backyard

Did you know you can find Georgian food in Philly? And not Georgia as in: peaches, biscuits, pecans, Bubba Sparxxx, where my beautiful younger sister goes to grad school – Georgia as in: borders Russia, a much longer plane ride. Dyadin Dvor, aka “Uncle’s Backyard,” in Northeast Philly fits in multiple categories of reasons I’d check out a restaurant based on appearance alone: an unpronounceable name, another name that makes you slightly uncomfortable, and a bizarre exterior that makes no sense in context (context being a strip mall that includes a furrier).
This confused, magical feeling that we were entering a special place endured as we took in the interior, complete with faux windows, plastic vines, and Lincoln log like tables and chairs.  My mouth’s anticipation continued to climb when I saw khachapuri on the first page of the menu, realizing I had stumbled in to a Georgian restaurant.

Chicken Bowl from the Butter Truck

From octopus balls to pb & js, Butter Sandwich Truck owner Nicole is all about the comfort food. A few years ago, she was helping bring takoyaki to the Gayborhood. Now, Butter focuses mostly on spruced up peanut butter and jelly and grilled cheese sandwiches. For me, what are more exciting are her rotating specials. This week, it included a chicken and dumpling stew ($6).

When on Snyder, La Rosa Pizza

I’m going to be real with you – I happened to be a bit day drunk when I stopped for lunch at La Rosa. I will do my best to recap, because I  really enjoyed myself at this little pizza spot. La Rosa has been open for over 30 years and must have a real loyal customer base- the counter lady could tell we were new.
