Another Corner Indonesian Steam Table at Ramayana

What is it the draws me to the little Indonesian food spots around town? Probably the bold flavors and cheap prices. Here is harder question: why are all Indonesian restaurants located on corners? Sky Cafe- corner. Hardena, Cafe Pendawa Lima, Lil Java, Indonesia Restaurant- all corners! Curious, right? Or do you just care what I ordered?

1st Ward Eclectic Sandwiches Don’t Have to Have a Theme

1st Ward opened this June at Front and Morris with a menu of about a dozen sandwiches and some sides. With a few seats inside, a few seats outside- it’s a welcoming, streamlined operation. I was pretty impressed at the diversity on the small sandwich menu and the fact that I probably could have been happy eating any of them.

South Philly Barbacoa is Beyond

This should be your lunch plan for tomorrow. Only open Friday-Sunday, South Philly Barbacoa recently moved from weekend cart oasis in South Philly to an  Isaiah Zagar decorated space at 11th and Morris- 2 blocks away from where the cart used to be parked.  Like the cart, the main offerings are barbacoa and pancita tacos, the former = slow cooked lamb, the later = organy, lamb loose sausage. Also absent was the plethora of seafood over ice you would hope to see at a place specializing in seafood. There were some frozen crab cakes, breaded fish fillets, clams, and crabs- but not else. Still, I threw caution to the winds of Tasker Street and put in an order.

Bacon Jam Smothered Biscuit from Fa Caldo Caffe

Fa Caldo opened this winter two blocks away from the East Passyunk area, featuring an all day breakfast menu. I know what you are thinking, “another cafe? Jamie, who gives a hoot?” But you should give several hoots. You should give them because of the homemade cheddar biscuits and the bacon jam you can put on it.

Guatemalan and Mexican To Go at Cafe Canela

Photo via James Jennings for Passyunk Post

Over the winter, Cafe Canela opened in the Lower Moyamensing neighborhood.  Appearing as another Mexican take out spot at first glance, a careful read of the menu suggested a Guatemalan chef in that kitchen.
