American-est Competitions this Week: South Philly Pizza Olympics & the Headhouse 3rd Annual Dog Days of Summer Cook-Off

Here’s where I’ll be consuming my calories this week-

Thursday:  6pm, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd, 6th Annual Pizza Olympics. Tickets are $15 and include all you can eat pizza and a chance to vote for categories like, “favorite Sicilian.” Tickets can be purchased here or at the door.

Saturday: 1-4pm, 2nd and Pine, 3rd Annual Dog Days of Summer Cook-Off. Pay as you go for your choice of any or all of the 20 different hot dog variations.

Tending To My Salami Obsession: School Lunch Revisited at Jean’s Cafe

Back in 2010, I had a turkey breast, melted Swiss, bacon, coleslaw, lettuce, tomato, and Russian dressing sandwich that I loved at Jean’s Cafe. Though I am always trying new places for lunch, I figured 4 years was enough time to warrant a return trip. Jean’s seems to maintain a steady lunch crowd, efficiently churning out sandwiches and salads for the hungry people.

A Quest for Fried Pork at Cibao Dominican Food

Great pork is worth traveling for. If I were Game of Thrones royalty, that would be the motto of my House. Dominican cuisine knows how to treat pork and Philly has some great Dominican kitchens. Like Bran searching for my three eyed raven, I trekked all the way up to Frankford and Ontario in the hopes of finding some crispy skinned pork somewhere new.

Malaysian Take Out at Center City’s Aqua Asian Bistro

When Aqua moved in to the tiny, ever changing spot on 16th Street, I thought Malaysian food would be a welcomed addition to the neighborhood, even though I had never visited the older location at 7th Street. As the space allows, it is mostly a take out spot, with one row of counter seating.

Matt & Marie’s Finally Brings Italian Sandwiches to Arch Street

Matt & Marie’s opened this week at 2 Logan Square, bringing a simple menu of 7 sandwiches, all $8.50, to the busy workers in the area. It is surprising to me how few solid sandwich options there are in this area. Besides Wawa and other sandwich chains, which most likely have a ton of chemicals/preservatives in their products, there are no options. Not that I am too good for a Wawa hoagie. I am not, I regularly crave the horseradish mayo spread.
