At Lunch Now: Chinese New Year Edition

Gotta have Chinese food on Chinese New Year, right? My goto is Hing Won on 48th btw. 5th & 6th. They have “Buhda” Delight as a New Year’s special, but I think I’m going to go with the shanghai rice cake with pork. (Aren’t you proud of me for not ordering the sauteed udon? Mixing it up is my Chinese New Years resolution). Although I might get some general tso’s chicken to go, find a steak and cheese sub, and make one of these.

At Lunch Now: Fat Tuesday Edition!

I don’t think there’s a perfect Midtown Lunch choice on Fat Tuesday.  Two Boots’ muffalatta is terrible, Delta Grill on 9th Ave is out of bounds (and out of the Midtown Lunch price range) and Jacques Imo’s To Geaux in the Grand Central Food Court is closed.  So, only one choice remains.  The take out, $8.25 Fried Oyster Po’Boy at Grand Central Oyster Bar.  Order from the window just to the right of the GCOB’s main entrance (in the food court on the lower level).

There are plenty of places to drink after work though.  Two I know of, in Midtown West, after the jump… Read more »

At Lunch Now: Indonesian Leftovers

Lunch at my desk today with leftovers from my dinner last night at Bali Nusa on 9th Ave. btw. 45+46th (just outside of Midtown Lunch boundaries).  I don’t care what anybody says about this place (it has its detractors), their Mee Goreng (listed as Bakmi Goreng on the menu) is almost as good as any version I had in Bali (almost.)  They also deliver…

A Few Improvements to Midtown Lunch

Just wanted to quickly point out two improvements recently made to Midtown Lunch.  First, some of you may have noticed that for the past month the site has been running incredibly slow, especially during lunch time (I can’t imagine why).  It appears as if Midtown Lunch has grown too big for our britches (ironic how it’s happening to me personally as well), so last weekend “I” (meaning my incredibly helpful brother) moved the site to a new server, and it appears to have fixed the problem.  The RSS feed is still the same, but some people had old feeds that are not working anymore, so if that is the case with you, replace your feed address with this link.  If you have no idea what I’m talking about, feel free to ignore, or read more about rss feeds here.

More importantly, Midtown Lunch *finally* has a map!  You’ll notice it on the top of the right hand sidebar.  Click on it, and you will be taken to our improved “Map & Restaurant Index” page.  Now, you can zoom in on the area you work in Midtown and see all of the places in your area that have been written about on Midtown Lunch, plus the ones I’m planning on writing about soon.  (There’s only so much stomach to go around).

Please feel free to email any problems, issues, suggestions or complaints to zach@midtownlunch.com  And of course thanks for reading the site, contributing your opinions in the comments, and telling your friends.  Here’s to continued growth, resulting in the failure of our new server!

At Lunch Now: Sakae Sushi is Open! (sort of) **Updated**

The conveyor belts have been fired up and are officially turning at
Sakae Sushi on 43rd St btw. Lex+3rd. There’s plenty of sushi making the
journey around the restaurant, but no hot food yet, because the gas is
not on. But the computers are working, so there is still plenty of fun
to be had…

***WEDNESDAY 1/29 Update:   The PR person for Sakae Sushi wanted me to pass along the info that as of last night, the full menu is now available***

Free Yolato Day is a Scam!!!

Apparently Yolato, and their PR dept’s definition of “Free Yolato” is something entirely different than my definition. Free Yolato means that you are not charging money for Yolato… And yet today, I arrived at Yolato to find the cash registers up and running, and a Midtown Lunch reader being charged $4 for her order. I guess Free Yolato to them means tiny cups of plain Yolato, being handed out on the sidewalk in front of the store. I can get a free sample of Yolato at any location in the city, just by walking in and asking for it. How is this a “Grand Opening Celebration”???

When free food is your favorite thing in the universe, being denied a full serving of promised free food after walking 15 minutes expecting free food makes Zach a very unhappy fat man.

The Midtown Lunch boycott of Yolato has officially begun. I demand satsifaction!

I’m in the mood for Onion Rings…

After last night’s Soprano’s episode, I’m sort of in the mood for some onion rings.  The best Onion rings I’ve had in Midtown (by far) are the ones at Del Frisco’s (49th btw. 6+7th)… but if you don’t have $11.95 to drop on a plate of fried onions (yes, a side order of onion rings is Twelve Dollars), my pick for best onion rings in Midtown would have to be Prime Burger on 51st btw. Madison & 5th.

A picture of those, plus the worst onion rings in Midtown… after the jump Read more »
