Trini Paki Boys Are Back: It's confirmed that the Trini Paki Boys cart has returned to its spot on 43rd and 6th today, and they have goat biriyani as a special.  It's good to have you back... that was a long three days.

Trini Paki Cart Will Return Tomorrow

DSC02988The Trini Paki Boys cart is still waiting on the inspection they need to renew their cart’s license, but in the meantime they’ve decided to rent a licensed cart from somebody else so they can get back to work (on 43rd btw. 5+6th).  There is a small chance they might show up late today with this borrowed cart, but more than likely tomorrow will be their first day back.  Their inspection is scheduled for November 17th, so they should be back in their original cart on the 18th.

Is the Trini Paki Cart Going Away?

If you can’t go too long without eating food from the Trini Paki Boys cart (the chicken over rice cart on 43rd btw. 5+6th) you might want to grab lunch there before the end of the week. They’re handing out fliers letting their customers know that the permit on their cart is up for renewal, and they might not be in their regular spot next week. Chicken over rice with pepper sauce and yogurt could be good, or you can try one of their daily specials. Naturally we’ll keep everyone updated on their situation next week. (Thanks to Lunch’er Steve for sending in a scan of the flier.)

Cafe Cello and Trini Paki Boys Post “Specials” Schedule

DSC04908

When I go to Cafe Cello (on 46th btw. 5+6th) I pretty much always order the roast pork (with an occasional fried chicken detour.)  But if you’re looking for something different they now have a schedule of their specials hung on their front door.  They have roast pork and fried chicken every day, but if you want oxtails you’ll have to go Wednesday, and for tripe (hello!) Thursday is your day.  Might have to stop by today though… it’s fried pork day!

You know who else has started putting a schedule up?  The Trini Paki Boys cart (on 43rd btw. 5+6th).

How Will Gourmet’s Closing Affect the Trini Paki Boys Cart?

DSC04743

I don’t know if the closing of Gourmet Magazine will have the same effect on the surrounding street lunch spots as the closing of Lehman Brothers did just over a year ago. But one cart that might notice is the Trini Paki Boys on 43rd and 6th, the go to chicken and rice spot for much of the Gourmet staff. In fact, both Editor in Chief Ruth Reichl, and Exec. Editor Doc Willoughby mentioned the cart in their respective profiles.

It was business as usual at the cart yesterday, where they actually added a brand new item to their already packed menu:  “Soya Chunks”, a tofu like substance that they’ve stewed in a really flavorful curry sauce. A lot of the smaller items available at the Trini Paki cart are vegetarian, but if you don’t eat meat and have always wanted to try their chicken over rice, this is the closest you’re going to get.

Trini Paki Brings Back All the Old Specials (Plus Their Own Version of the “Kati Roll”)

Trini Paki Boys

The Trini Paki Cart (on 43rd & 6th Ave.) has become the present that keeps on giving.  By now you’ve read about how excited I was to discover all the things they serve in addition to their Pakistani chicken over rice plate, with Trinidadian pepper sauce.  There were the doubles and poulori (which are served every day), the special biriyani on Thursdays, and the pigeon peas pulau on Wednesdays.  But wait… there’s more! And while some of these things might be old news to longtime fans of the cart, now that business has picked up a bit getting some of these special things has become less of a crap shoot.

Pelau Reminder: Don't forget, today (and tomorrow) is pigeon peas pelau day at the Trini Paki Boys cart (on 43rd & 6th.) Today they made it with beef, tomorrow they're planning on chicken.

Trini Paki Boys’ New Chicken & Pigeon Peas Pelau

pigeon

I don’t necessarily have some burning desire to eat pigeon (or squab, or whatever you want to call it) from a cart, but I will admit to being slightly disappointed to find that the Trini Paki Boys (on 43rd & 6th) were actually serving pigeon peas- not pigeon- yesterday. I suspected as much when I got the tip, but it didn’t lessen the let down.  I’ve eaten a lot of gross things in the name of Midtown Lunch’ing, but I’m pretty sure pigeon from a New York City street cart would have gotten me inducted into the Andrew Zimmern hall of fame (if such a thing existed.)

As long as I was there, I figured I’d try the “pigeon” dish they were serving… chicken pelau (with pigeon peas.)

At Lunch Now: Pigeon Peas is Different Than Pigeon

As suspected, the Trini Paki Boys Cart (on 43rd and 6th) was not selling pigeon today, but pigeon peas- as part of a chicken "pelau" introduced yesterday. The dish is a traditional Trinidadian rice dish that they plan on having every Tuesday and Wednesday. Full report coming soon. (Oh, and btw… tomorrow is goat biriyani day at the cart. Maybe not as exciting as pigeon, but it’ll have to do.)
