Whiskey Rebel: Because Rebels Like to Go Out of Bounds

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every week our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

Whiskey Rebel is part of a family of bars that includes Snafu and Whiskey Trader. Like its siblings, Rebel offers a comfortable space to grab a drink. If the unlimited popcorn is not enough for you, there are no problems with bringing in some Vindaloo from the Curry Hill area to supplement your night. Alluring bartenders draw you in, but it’s the happy hour specials that keep you warm through the night. This area of town doesn’t get enough attention on the JOB (Just Out of Bounds) drink deals so here is a look inside!

What Do You Get at Ray’s For Your 99 Cents?

Earlier this week we reported that Ray’s Pizza (on Broadway btw. 54+55th) was not only selling pizza for 75 cents, but also had introduced a 99 cent menu featuring burgers, pasta, garlic bites and more.  Lunch’er Jesse, who tipped us off to the deal in the first place, was there the day we posted and had this to say:

Ray’s seemed quite busy around lunchtime today. It was a bit dead in the upstairs seating area when we first arrived, but the downstairs was getting crowded by the time we were ready to leave. As far as the menu goes, I tried to order a 99 cent burger, but was told it wasn’t available at the time. Two slices wound up costing $1.63. The bad news is that they have no flavor of any kind at all. It is simply like biting into a luke warm texture, sort of a mix between cardboard and a tepid sponge. With generous applications of hot pepper, parmesan and garlic powder, we were able to fashion it into something that might be mistaken for pizza.

We know what crappy pizza looks like… but what about the 99 cent menu!  Thanks to Luncher Wellerfan for taking the bullet on that front…

Flatiron Lunch: If You’re Craving Vietnamese L’Annam 28 Does the Trick

IMG_2440

After all my recent reminiscing about the meals I ate while in Vietnam, I found myself craving the flavors of Southeast Asia. Pho 32 and Golden City just weren’t going to cut it, so I decided to see what my options were in the Kips Bay/Murray Hill South area. I don’t often make my way that far east, so I thought I’d explore, if I didn’t find anything, I could always fall back on Baoguette. It didn’t come to that, and though I’m now fiending for a banh mi sandwich, I’m happy to have discovered L’Annam 28.

2 Bros Named One of the Worst Signs in NYC

New 2 Bros Pizza, MidtownEater compiled a list of the 10 most “Eyeball Searing” restaurant signs, and 2 Bros Pizza somehow made the list. We’ve never really given their logo much thought, but apparently it’s over the top. (Who knew?) The best part is, that’s not even the most stereotypically hilarious sign in Midtown. That honor goes to the Oriental Noodle Shop.

A Few of NYC’s Best Budget Burgers Are Around Here

Wined and Dined put together a list of NYC’s best budget burgers and more than a few are in Midtown. ML mainstays the Burger Joint (on 56th btw. 6+7th) and Black Shack Burger (on Lex btw. 37+38th) made the cut, but the place we’re most interested in trying is the just out of bounds Stag’s Head (on 51st and 2nd Ave.) Their $7.25 burger comes with fries and is made with Pat LaFrieda beef. Yes please.

Half off Bon Chon Chicken: Korean fried chicken fans will want to hit up Groupon today... you can get $30 worth of chicken from the Bon Chon on 38th btw. 7+8th for just $15. Do it. Do it.

Biryani Cart’s Juicy Wings Are Different… and Pretty Damn Good

The Biryani Cart empire on 46th btw. 6+7th got a little bigger this week with the launch of Juicy Wings, a cart specializing in chicken wings. The new cart is situated on the north side of 46th, across from Meru’s other two carts. This week’s cold weather, and major snowfall, is not ideal for a brand new cart, but those who have braved the elements have been treated to an interesting new option in mobile dining. Get a look at all four kinds of wings after the jump.
