What Do You Get at Ray’s For Your 99 Cents?
Earlier this week we reported that Ray’s Pizza (on Broadway btw. 54+55th) was not only selling pizza for 75 cents, but also had introduced a 99 cent menu featuring burgers, pasta, garlic bites and more. Lunch’er Jesse, who tipped us off to the deal in the first place, was there the day we posted and had this to say:
Ray’s seemed quite busy around lunchtime today. It was a bit dead in the upstairs seating area when we first arrived, but the downstairs was getting crowded by the time we were ready to leave. As far as the menu goes, I tried to order a 99 cent burger, but was told it wasn’t available at the time. Two slices wound up costing $1.63. The bad news is that they have no flavor of any kind at all. It is simply like biting into a luke warm texture, sort of a mix between cardboard and a tepid sponge. With generous applications of hot pepper, parmesan and garlic powder, we were able to fashion it into something that might be mistaken for pizza.
We know what crappy pizza looks like… but what about the 99 cent menu! Thanks to Luncher Wellerfan for taking the bullet on that front…
Went to check it out. Here’s what I got. They didnt have any burgers at the moment. I was most impressed with the pasta. Not sure if you can tell from the pic, but the pasta was a very good portion for .99.It could be a lunch on its own for some people. Also loved the steak fries, I was scared they were gonna be some flimmsy thin cut fries. The best quality stuff? Not really. Did it taste good? Yes! Does my stomach hurt now, yes! Haha it was worth it!
Can’t decide if we want them to finally start serving the 99 cent burger, or if some things are better left alone…

That $.75 slice doesn’t look as good as the $1 slices do. I know that sounds like splitting hairs, but it’s a weird color.

Onion rings are tempting….but I’d still rather pay the extra 17 cents and go across the street to 99CFP. Hell I’ll even splurge on the extra quarter for a topping.

Your welcome LOL! The garlic bites are what put me over the edge. The fries were really not that bad. The onion rings were very greasy, natch(finally got to use that word),but with ketchup not bad either. Of course this isn’t something I would do every day, or month!

You don’t need to punish yourself by eating this. I heard you can really save money by bringing food from home for lunch

While I completely agree with the sentiment, bringing food from home is often *more* expensive than eating at this so-called “restaurant.” One of the many ridiculous things about life in NYC.

I have tried ray’s pizza and I find them better than the other pizza across the street they don’t have the taste that ray’s has and the food is ten times better yes I eat there when I can I have tried alot of pizza places but nothing comes close to ray’s pizza

I can prob go for 99c beef patty. Too bad nobody has gotten that yet.
