Papa Perrone Saves Eddie’s Pizza From the Cops… Today

An interesting thing happened on 55th street today that other food truck vendors would be wise to pay attention to.  Because of all the UN madness on the east side, Eddie’s Pizza Truck was forced to find a new spot this morning for their Thursday service. Where did they choose?  55th btw. Park+Mad… right next to the Papa Perrone truck, who also sells pizza.  Naturally, Papa Perrone wasn’t too happy about it, not just because they both sell pizza but because he’s worked hard over the past few years to cultivate a relationship with the building on that block- who in turn have agreed not to complain to the cops, provided that the block doesn’t turn into a food truck parking lot.  So when Eddie’s showed up this morning, Jon Paul (aka “Papa Perrone”) explained the situation, hoping that they would find an alternate spot.  Obviously nobody wants to see a repeat of what happened on 48th Street a few weeks ago.

Eddie’s response?  Kill them with kindness…

Free Ice Cream Alert: Thanks to Lunch'er HollyDiver for pointing this one out in the Forums... Carvel is giving away free Swiss Miss hand dipped ice cream all day long today. There are a few Carvels in the area- but if last year's promotion is any indication, the only one participating is in 1 Penn Plaza. Can any freeloaders confirm?

Holy Mackerel, Mai Sushi is Pretty Good

I should probably admit off the bat that I never ate at Chiyoda Sushi (on 41st btw. Mad+5th). Of all the times I walked right by it on my way to Cafe Zaiya, I think I stopped in once and I still ended up going to Zaiya. Despite Zach’s strong recommendation to check it out, I just couldn’t get excited for what was described as a more refined (more expensive) version of the Zaiya experience. Admittedly I’m not sure why that was because I’ve definitely spent $10 at Zaiya before, so it’s not like that is usually a dirt cheap lunch for me. Now that Chiyoda has been reborn as Mai Sushi, I decided it was time to give them a try.

UN Screwing the Streets Up: The UN madness is wreaking havoc on the ML Twitter Tracker this morning... Crisp is giving away a $5 coupon, Wafels & Dinges is on 46th, Joyride Truck is on 52nd, and Cravings is on 53rd.  But Schnitzel & Things have been forced downtown, and Eddie's Pizza has ended up on 55th- but Papa Perrone isn't very happy about it.

Ramen Totto is Serving a 9 Chili Soup!

Photo courtesy of Food in Mouth

About a month ago Chris H. declared his love for the spicy paitan ramen at Ramen Totto (on 52nd btw. 8+9th). But if spicy is what you’re looking for, you might want to go for the Totto Extreme Spicy Ramen instead. It’s the same price as the spicy paintan ($10.25) but has 9 chilies next to its name on the menu (compared to 2 on the other soup!) How hot is it? We think the photo says it all. [via Food in Mouth]

Kashmir Grill Now Selling a $1 Burger

When walking by Kashmir Grill on 8th Ave. btw. 39+40, I noticed that they are now serving a $1 burger (how could I not notice? Look at all those signs!). Let’s face it, you can get a slice of pizza for $1 anywhere in Midtown these days. But a $1 burger?  That’s uncharted territory. Apparently Kashmir thought they had to do something drastic after my  less-than-enthusiastic write up a couple of weeks ago. It’s a little too soon for me to set foot back in that place, but if anyone is brave enough (and cheap enough) to try this Dollar Burger, please let us know how it goes.

Help Blondie and Brownie Win $10K: When I moved to L.A. Blondie and Brownie were just two of the ML Friends that agreed to share their Midtown Lunches with you guys for the good of the site (lord knows I don't pay them that much). Here's our chance to pay them back! They're trying to win Foodbuzz's "Project Food Blog" and need your vote. If you've got a sec, go help them out.

Bill’s Bar & Burger Opening on Tuesday

Feast NY has an update on the long awaited branch of Bill’s Bar & Burger in Rock Center.  According to them the location is not only opening on Tuesday, but it will also have some new sandwich and salad selections not on the menu at the MePa location- including “a riff on In-n-Out’s West Coast classic called the Sunset and Vine” and “a grilled chicken BLT on a poppy seed roll; Asian chicken salad; Rockefeller salad topped with fried oysters, gruyere and bacon with Champagne tartar sauce; falafel; and even meatballs.”

50% off Melt: Remember Melt, the just out of bounds gelato and crepe cafe on 2nd Ave. btw 55+56th?  If you haven't checked it out yet, here's something to get you motivated.  Use this link to get $16 worth of stuff from Melt for just $8. (That includes gelato, crepes, panini, wraps, coffee and more.)

Have Indian Food Carts Left the Steam Table Joints In the Dust?

minar-001

A couple of days ago I went and tried the slightly out of bounds location of Minar (on 31st btw. 5+6th). It’s never been featured on ML before, but the food is pretty much identical to the more famous Midtown location on 46th btw. 6+7th.  The original Minar was actually one of Zach’s earliest Midtown Lunches and amazingly enough, the post still resonates today, FOUR years later. Back in ’06 Zach wrote, “I went with the Chicken Tikka Masala (for sake of comparison with other places), the Lamb curry, and the Saag Paneer… but the curry was too watery.” I had the exact same order and the same qualities could be found in Minar today. I guess you’ve gotta hand it to them for consistency!
