2009 Readers’ Poll: Best Fried Chicken

It’s time for the 3rd Annual Midtown Lunch Readers’ Poll. Your nominations are in, and between now and the end of the year I’ll be asking all of you to vote for the best Midtown Lunches in a whole range of categories. You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

Just because 8th Ave. is the fried chicken corridor of Midtown, doesn’t mean that’s where the *best* fried chicken is. Or is it? Popeye’s makes some damn fine chicken… but it’s a National chain, which goes against what Midtown Lunch is all about. But damn it’s some good chicken. Could they take it? Or will Korean fried chicken rule the day? We also had two new street food versions of fried chicken join the fray this year. Ignore them at your own peril. The nominees are…

Vote for your favorite, after the jump…

Vote for your favorite Midtown Lunches in these other categories:
Best Sandwiches
Best Sit Down Chinese Food
Best Street Meat
Best Chinese Fast Food
Best Midtown Happy Hour
Best Latin Food
Best Coffee
Best Falafel
Best Fast Food Hamburger

  • If popeye wins, it’s probably because more people have tasted Popeyes than any other chicken joints listed here.

  • Or because Popeye’s is delicious.

  • I’ve had:
    * Cafe Cello (46th btw. 5+6th)
    * Fried Chicken Cart (55th & Madison)
    * Jerk Pan Cart (Park & 48th)
    * NYC Cravings (Multiple Locations)
    * Popeye’s (40th btw. 7+8th)

    Yeah, Popeye’s kicks their ass. I haven’t had chiknnhouse/pisachikn/mad4chikn, but I doubt they’d sway me.

  • I voted for Popeye’s because that’s the only fried chicken I have tasted so far and I certainly do like their fried chicken…but isn’t exactly fair to other fried chicken places.

    Mkim, why isn’t it “fair” to the other places? I vote in elections without feeling obligated to be familiar with the views of every nutcase on the ballot. Since you like Popeye’s chicken, it would be unfair to them to withhold your vote.

  • I really like Popeye’s, but Korean Fried Chicken trumps it everytime. I would only vote for Popeye’s because it’s more convenient, but in terms of taste, it has to go to MFC. It’s just that the service at MFC sucks worse than Diego Sanchez’s latest display. Just damn too slow.

  • Well, the New York Times reported today that “New York Ranks in Last Place in Happiness Rating”.

    YUP, people in New Yawk City are the unhappiest people in the country.

    And now I know why! It’s because all New Yawkas crave Southen’ fried chicken, but they have to settle for ‘Popeye’s’ — or even WORSE, some korean crap.

    And all they gotta do is buy a frickin’ cast-iron skillet, some lard, a “Pilgrim’s Pride” chicken and fry it up themselves.

    How simple is that?

  • Ignorance is bliss~~

    Add a category for Best Thai please! And maybe one for Best Sit-Down??

  • According to some people here, there is no best thai in midtown.

  • Mad for chicken is delicious and in a category in itself. But it’s not technically a Midtown Lunch. Very expensive for your everyday lunch. My vote goes to Piece of Chicken. The epitome of a perfect ML meal.

  • I think Popeye’s deserves the win. One of my fav. Fried Chickens and won’t cost you an arm and a leg either.

    Anyone know if Kyochon is closer to opening? Was in Koreatown last night and the red-and-white building wrap/signage is still up around the space at 32nd and 5th. It says opening “Winter”… hoping that means sometime soon…
