PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Teresa”
Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Teresa, the girl responsible for the amazing Wah Mei Pork Chop Fast Food delivery story last week. I wanted to see what other tricks she might up her sleeve!
Name: Teresa
Age: 26
Occupation: QA Analyst (just started 6 months ago and still don’t really know what I do exactly).
Where in Midtown do you Work?: TheMarkets.com around 53rd and 7th
Favorite Kind of Food: So far, my favorite is street food in Taipei. The food is so tasty and cheap. Whenever I visit Taipei, I make sure to have noodles almost everyday. Also, they have their famous soup dumplings at Din Tai Fung. The dumpling skin is much thinner than what I get here in Chinatown/Flushing. This summer I’ll be visiting Japan, so I hope to find some new favorites.
Least Favorite Kind of Food: Mushrooms, sea cucumber, abalone, clams, oysters, mussels, most of the “exotic” seafood in a typical Chinese banquet.
Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Tonkotsu or Curry Ramen at Men Kui Tei on 56th btw. 5+6th (I found out sadly they don’t serve Mabo Ramen for lunch), Fried Chicken Curry Udon at Teriyaki Boy (on 7th Ave. btw. 48+49th), Beef Soft Tofu Soup at Cafe Duke’s (on 51st btw. 6+7th), and the unlimited salad at Stage Star (on 55th & 6th).
“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Cafe Duke’s, Bocca, China Gourmet (although I never eat there), Street meat at 53rd and 6th and the Crown Deli.
Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? NYC Cravings Truck, even though I wish I never had their unsatisfactory pork chop over rice. The $5 May Lunch Special at Shilla, which was very good. Szechuan Gourmet, but I have yet to try it
If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Tokyo so I can eat ramen everyday, Rome so I can have pizza, gelato and pasta everyday, or Taipei so I can have beef noodle soup everyday.
Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? My old job was close to Cafe Zaiya and Yagura (both on 41st btw. Mad+5th), so I miss the takeout Japanese food. Is there anything like this near 53rd and 7th? Cafe Duke’s does NOT count. If there are none, what’s the closest place to my office? I’m willing to travel.
Hmmm. Pro Hot Korean is kind of like the Korean version of Cafe Zaiya, and that’s on 56th btw. 5+6th. Not *as* good, (and the selection isn’t as large as Zaiya) but it’s good enough. And close to your office.
Anybody else have a recommendation? Put it in the comments. And as always if you’d like to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email me at zach@midtownlunch.com.

Katagiri works, if you’re willing to walk (59th btween 2nd and 3rd).
They have onigiri, japanese salads, sushi platters, little teriakyi plates and tempura for takeout, in addition to an array of Japanese grocery stuff on the shelves in the back. They’ve even got frozen shabu shabu meat–cubicle hot pot, anyone?

i QA too! (not just my food, but for work too)

the above comment by Rudy McBagel is probably one of the meanest things I have seen listed even if it is meant in good fun or as part of the hazing process for all profiled ML’ers. Had I been a new reader on this site, I think many may be taken back by that comment.
-
Amazingly Enough, I have seen Mr. McBagel making even ruder comments. I am sure many of us can attest to that. (Oooh, I use the term Mr. LOOSELY)
Second, Fred, the song is good but I am confident we can do better…..
-
Well, I want everyone to be able to sing along – think of all MTL’ers worldwide filling Wembley Stadium to capacity, singing that song, with mamacita and Wayne directing. All of the profilees would march around the stadium’ outer track, waving to the assembled crowd. If some profilees couldn’t make it, we’d hire celebs like Liv Tyler to take their place. We’d put it on youtube, it’d be viral in a week, I’d play it for Wilma on the record player using a bird with a newly sharpened beak for the record player needle, etc etc. Eventually, it’d serve as the 30 second commercial for Midtown Lunch at the halftime of the Superbowl.
or, eh, uhm, I could work on a new, grander idea
-
Y’know, I read Teresa’s profile and thought: here’s the first profile in some time relatively immune from the mean comments we’ve all grown to know and love. She speaks intelligently about food and about herself, submitted a reasonably flattering photo and seemed to have no bizarre or unusual personal habits. Fools such as I are often deluded, however. Sure enough, there’s Mr. McBagel and Fred somehow finding something aberrant to say, however irrelevant to Teresa’s profile. Zach, maybe we need to give the profile feature a rest.
-
I’m the new food troll here. I suggest NoPickles remove the stick up his butt, unless you’d like some pickle related humor somewhere along the lines of how they resemble The Hulk’s penis.
-
Teresa’s hot and def female! McBagel is just wistful that his male lover left him, name not to be disclosed but he went to prison yesterday, and is taking it out on the world, since his lifestyle has been shattered.
-
Cheese, really? That’s the best you can come up with?
I swear, they should require licenses for being on the internet the way you need a license to drive a car.
-
No Pickles, you could just avoid reading comments by Rudy/Fred/UpChuck (oops, DocChuck). Then you won’t have to worry about being offended :)
-
@adamprato: Says the guy who just made a terrible puke joke. You sir just lost the internets.
-
opinions about everything,knowledge about nothing.
-
Rudy, I’m not saying *I’m* offended. I’m just helping her to enjoy ML without being so (easily) offended :)
-
@NoPickles – Agreed. No more making fun of the way Midtown Lunchers look. It’s just stupid, and not funny.
Too many complaints. The comment has been deleted.
-
Wow— I participated in the only Zach closed thread so far on Midtown Lunch (Where are you dude from rockplaza? Was it Chris?) and feel we are inching towards a number 2. Plus, I am with Goats, Teresa has a Hot Profile Pic… Did you ever look at some of the others? (Me, wearing a tie and holding cookies is up there…)
-
I choose to skip over most all retarded comments and have a pretty thick skin, but some comments are just in bad taste and I dont think any website would want to be linked to that.
@CheeeeEEEse: looking forward to additional humor from a new source. Try harder next time though
@adamprato: thanks for the internet lessons. Where can I find the “any” key?
-
Aww, she dislikes everything that I like. =(
-
…and I was wondering why there were so few comments posted for the ML of the week…
-
Goodness.
That’s me done then.
No more From me.
Adios, ta’ta ,tooodle’s, pippip.
Be safe in your brave ‘free’ new world :)
-
I’ve always thought the pizza in italy (particularly naples) is the best in the world.

RE: “opinions about everything, knowledge about nothing”
LOL — That’s the most intelligent thing that the fuffalo has ever written, and I love it!
But I have a question or three:
1. What the hell is a “QA Analyst”, especially if the “QA Analyst” doesn’t even know what her job is?
2. Is Teresa CERTAIN that she is analyzing “QA” or will she be analyzing something more exotic?
3. How do I apply for a job as a “QA Analyst”?
And finally, is “FRED” now working as a “QA Analyst” in Atlanata?
-
So no one likes the FoW theme song and accompanying video?
-
Rudy gone… this is the end of midtown lunch as we know it. Zach my friend watch out for the sharks that’s a pretty big jump.
P.S. Ladyboy may be mean but i think it’s funny.
-
Lament not.
Rudy is like a Phoenix. He shall arise from the ashes, stronger, and better, and more ‘fuffalo bucking’ than ever.
I only wish that I could say the same about Wilma (sorry, I meant “Fred”).
-
@NoPickles – I didn’t mean to come off as condescending. Sorry if you took it that way. I figured it was a helpful comment :)
-
now I am dying to know what he said!!! Special prize to the first person who emails me the gossip fressagirl@gmail.com
-
Maybe we should start a thread in the forum called Today’s ML Profile or Freak of the Week?
-
@ fressagirl – it wasn’t that bad or offensive. just not that funny (or true).
What I said a few weeks ago still stands. Unless your photo is up on this website as part of a profile, you have no right to make negative comments about what a Profiled Luncher looks like. (It’s no coincidence that the same people who make these comments every week, refuse to be profiled themselves.)
Fair is fair.
-
Teresa —
You seem to have a good knowledge of Asian delicacies on the West Side. Do you have any recommendations for non-veggie Asian goodies on the East Side?
-
snoooze
-
Well, Mr. “adamprato”, although I admire the profuse hair on your face (usually the sign of one’s need to express one’s uncertain masculinity, according to Doctors of Psychology), I was simply wondering how you were chosen to advise other posters on which people to avoid:
“No Pickles, you could just avoid reading comments by Rudy/Fred/UpChuck (oops, DocChuck). Then you won’t have to worry about being offended”.
Are you now the OFFICIAL moderator on this website, or should I simply assume that you are full of shit?
Oh, and by the way, as soon as I need my computer ‘fixed’ I will be sure to give YOU a call — LOL!
-
“RE: “opinions about everything, knowledge about nothing”
LOL — That’s the most intelligent thing that the fuffalo has ever written, and I love it!”
Well Mr. “DocChuck09″, my “profuse” facial hair is because I get ingrown hairs when I shave to the skin, and I got tired of the the pain, so I leave a little growth. But yah, I see why you’re keen about the “knowledge of nothing” comment :) But if you wan’t to go there, I have to say you’re doing a stellar job of hiding your bald-spot with that handsome fedora. I’m sure it’s much easier to avoid the glare off that dome of chrome than to go through hours of correction using photoshop.
I was chosen to advise on which comments to avoid the same way you were chosen to advise us on which street carts to avoid or how to make a proper sandwich.
As for your computer, there isn’t a disinfectant strong enough that would sway me to consider touching your sexual partner.
-
I knew McBagel was living on borrowed time and today he went just one insult over the line. ML hazing is one thing. Borderline slander is another.
-
McBagel gone! A great day!
-
A sad day for all midtown lunchers…a black day.
-
second attempt at a FotW theme song
(sung to the tune of Tubthumping by Chumbawamba)I get profiled
I’m Freak of the Week
and I’m lunchin’ in Midtown(repeat, repeat, repeat)
He eats some dutchy meat
He eats some halal meat
He eats pastrami meat
He eats some kogi meat
He sing the songs that remind him of the red sauce
He sings the songs that remind him of the white sauceDon’t cry for me, I got a Walgreen’s sandwich
-
WILL SOMEONE PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO FRED :)
You get an A- for effort for that one. I think you meant “hot sauce” though.
-
Wait a minute, who am *I* to be grading people’s posts? Who appointed me official tabulator of post value?! Next time your comments need a grading, be sure to give ME a call! “LOL”
-
Ladyboy Ladyboy Ladyboy……..Rudy Rudy Rudy Rudy Rudy Rudy Rudy Rudy Rudy
-
P.S. Teresa it’s not you I think your alot better then half the profiled lunchers profiled but people are getting a lil to PC. I come to ML to escape work even for a moment but with these rules I might as well go back to bothering tourists.
-
D, who are you to judge which profiled lunchers are better than others? Who appointed you official luncher profile evaluator? If I ever need a luncher profile evaluated, I’ll be sure to give YOU a call – “LOL”
-
wow, i’m a day late and so curious to see what rudy mcbagel wrote too! oh well.
teresa, i LOOOOVE din tai fung! if you are ever in southern california, they have a branch in a town called arcadia, about an hour or so east of LA (without traffic of course)
there is also a semi-decent place in chinatown on elizabeth street. you know where that tunnel underpass thing is that goes from elizabeth to the bowery? well it’s right near the tunnel across from that herbal medicine place. it says shanghai something outside and has pictures of dumplings in the windows. try it!
-
Maybe a takeoff on the “Wayne’s World” theme next…..hmm……I mean, if anything is party time and excellent, it’s FotW
-
BTW, is it wrong that I still get a big chuckle when I see that this blog is heavily sponsored (and by that, I refer to advertising presence) by Chipotle?
-
Wow, it was hard to read through all 46 comments since 98% of them were not relevant to my question I asked.
@Dylan: Wow, sounds like Yagura. I’m tempted to trek there one day. Thanks for your suggestion.
@famdoc: Thanks! It was a surprise to read a nice comment in a sea of insulting comments.
@DDR: What kind of Asian cuisine? I usually stay away from Chinese food in Midtown because I know I can get something much better and cheaper in Chinatown. However, when I worked at SeamlessWeb, I did go to Evergreen Shanghai on 38th Street (between 5th and Madison). Also, the Wu Liang Ye chain is pretty good, but a bit pricey. When I worked near Grand Central, I’d go to Cafe Zaiya or Yagura on 41st Street (between 5th and Madison). I’m also a huge fan of the Tempura Udon at Aji Sushi in Murray Hill. I think they are owned by Chinese people, but their food is pretty decent. I can’t vouch for their sushi since I only eat cooked food at Japanese restaurants.
@casadelun: I’m an embarrassment at Chinese banquets. I give you props for eating all the foods I dislike. Sometimes I wish I wasn’t so picky!
@vjchin: I heard about the Din Tai Fung in Arcadia, but haven’t had a chance to venture out there. Din Tai Fung came to Flushing a couple of times and my mom was lucky enough to get a reservation when they took over the Sheraton hotel, so I was able to enjoy the dumplings for a huge markup. I haven’t tried this Shanghainese restaurant you speak of. Do you have at least a name I can go by? Thank you!
-
Teresa,
Well played. -
it needs work, but attempt #4:
Bawitdaba da bang a dang Freak O Weeky Weeky said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang Freak O Weeky Weeky said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang Freak O Weeky Weeky said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang Freak O Weeky Weeky said the boogy said up jump the boogyAnd this is for the questions that only Zach knows the answers
The midnight snacks and the halal platters
The candied sweets, trucks packed with eats
The cart’s with the deals and the shops with freebies
The Northern edge and the Southern border
And it don’t even matter if the burgers are cooked to order
All the locals, the critics, the others
And all my heros who used to work at Lehman Brothers
All you bastards at the DOH
For the cart-nazi cops and the Bulkie W&D ate
For the shots of jack and the MamaC’s dives
Half pints of Stella and the fifths of Stout
For the pa-losers eating rice in Bryant Park
And for my hoods of the boroughs not included
I said it’s all tasty and it’s all in fun
Now get outta Cafe Metro and try to love your lunch! -
with apologies of course to Kid Rock
-
[...] (Wah Mei Pork Chop), that delivers to midtown. It was great! Anyway, go ahead and read my little profile. Yes I’m aware that 99% of the comments were irrelevant to my food question. Oh well! [...]

Always a good idea to go public with the admission that you have no idea what you do for a living after half a year at your current job. Especially in this economy.
