Midtown Lunch

Cer Te (on 55th btw. 5+6th) introduced their sandwich of the month for March yesterday, and unlike last month’s “Chubby Chinese Girl” (which was named after the blog of the same name), “The Fall of Saigon” has not been universally accepted.  Lunch’er “Masto” is a fan:

“I thought the Fall of Saigon tastes great. It’s buffalo chicken on something like a kaiser roll with lettuce, and julienne carrots and cucumber. Pretty far off from a banh mi flavor and texture wise, but I don’t think that was the point.”

But not everybody agrees.

One of my very first Zaro’s memories is having Chocolate Hamantaschen for breakfast after training into the city from Connecticut to decide if I wanted to attend NYU.  I can’t say that the hamantaschen were so good that they tipped the scales, but they certainly didn’t hurt.  Sadly, for the past couple of years I’ve had a hard time finding Zaro’s chocolate hamantaschen, but this year they are back!

Just walked by the soon to open Midtown Kyochon, on 5th Ave. btw. 32+33rd, and one of the guys outside said Wednesday was going to be opening day for the famous Korean Fried Chicken chain’s first Manhattan location. There are some serious looking Korean guys in suits inside, and someone is making chicken. (Presumably for the professional photographer taking photos inside.) Naturally there is a lot of commotion outside (remember what happened at the new Bon Chon?)

When I read the other day that El Rey Del Sabor is now offering al pastor, I was all over it. I headed to their new cart on Park Ave and 49th Street (one of three they now operate in Midtown)- and not only did I score an al pastor taco, I also grabbed a spicy pork torta, and a carne asada huarache. This was a cheap excuse to splurge and buy a few menu items that I’ve been meaning to try under the pretext of getting a taco in the name of ML. I know, I just give and give don’t I? It was a ton of food, but luckily I had a friend with me to help out.

A+ Thai is rolling out a $7.95 lunch today after opening over the weekend. Between 11:30 and 3:30, $7.95 gets you the entree only, but throw in another $2 if you want the appetizer-entree-drink combo. At first glance, menu items like the “Mega Ball dumplings” sound intriguing. Maybe we don’t need another pseudo-Southeast Asian place on the (far) East Side, but what we do need is a good one. Let us know how it is if you get there first.

I don’t need to remind anybody about the disgusting weather we had last Thursday and Friday, but nothing was going to keep me from trying NYC Cravings pork shumai especially after seeing this foggy picture. Cheap, good shumai is high on my “What We Need in Midtown” list, and Cravings delivered!
