Féile’s Food Looks Good, But It’s a Happy Hour Fail

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every Friday afternoon we post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

Féile first came to my attention during NY Craft Beer week when they were one of the participating venues. I noticed Mamacita has never reviewed this place (although she did bash their sister bar Maggie’s not too long ago) and even though it was in the overcrowded area of Penn Station, I thought I’d stop in for a brew.

Flatiron Lunch: Grill 21 is Filipino Food Worth an Out of Bounds Trip

Every Friday our man UltraClay goes south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Unless you live or work on the far east side, there’s nothing convenient about going to first avenue for lunch. In fact, it’s quite the schlep. When I got back into town last month, I had to make the trip to Stuyvesant Town to see a friend – the same friend who recommended Petite Abielle some time ago – and he told me he had a great lunch find I just had to try. He wasn’t wrong.

Filipino food is few and far between in New York, especially in lunching bounds. I’ve been on the lookout ever since I discovered the Filipino breakfast in San Francisco last summer. so when we planned to meet up at Grill 21 (21st Street and 1st Ave), I was already excited. When I found out they have $8 lunch specials, the only question was how soon could we get there.

Rice Ball Grandma Slice Hits the Papa Perrone Menu

New York Pizzerias are known for their crazy-ass pizza toppings (we’re looking at you baked ziti and buffalo chicken from Little Italy) but this might be the craziest, most carb laden topping of them all. Check out the latest addition to the Papa Perrone Truck… a grandma slice, topped with one of their rice balls. For those of you keeping score, that’s a cheese filled risotto ball, rolled in bread crumbs, deep fried, and pressed down onto a slice of pizza. This monstrosity will set you back $4.75 ($5.75 if you want it topped with parmesan) and will be available as long as they have the pizza and rice balls to make it. The truck has been parking on 55th btw. Mad+5th, but you can double check their twitter account just to be sure.

Vilcek Foundation Celebrates Immigrant Vendors

Speaking of Street Meat… the Vilcek Foundation, an organization that honors and supports foreign born scientists and artists who have made significant contributions to society in the U.S., has dedicated their entire Fall 2011 newsletter to immigrant street food vendors. Here at Midtown Lunch we’ve always seen what a huge contribution immigrants have made to the vibrant street food scene of New York, so it’s nice to see somebody else recognizing the connection.  The newsletter has features on six immigrant food vendors from around the country (including two in NYC: Dessert Truck and Veronica’s Kitchen), and the introduction was written by yours truly!  Check it out…

#occupymidtown: Schnitzel & Things is on 51st, Gorilla Cheese is on 55th & 6th, Bian Dang is on 53rd & Park, Crisp on Wheels and Bob & Jo are on Vanderbilt near 46th, Papa Perrone is on 55th btw. Mad+5th, Comme Ci Comme Ca is on 36th & B'way (although lines might be long today!), Wafels & Dinges is on 46th btw. 5+6th, Joyride is on 51st btw. Park+Mad, and Luke's Lobster is in Midtown but can't seem to find a spot... so you might want to check the ML Twitter Tracker before heading out.

Street Meat Palooza 4: A New Champion Has Been Crowned

Two weeks ago today, 30+ brave Midtown Lunch’ers gathered in Bryant Park with 34 plates of chicken and lamb over rice with white sauce and hot sauce from 17 different carts and food trucks. The goal? Crown the street meat champion of Midtown.  In 2008, The Famous Halal Guys’ daytime cart (parked on the SE Corner of 53rd and 6th) took home the inaugural Street Meat Palooza crown- silencing critics who have called the ultra popular cart bland and overrated. A year later, the equally popular Kwik Meal cart (on 45th and 6th) had its revenge at Street Meat Palooza 2. And last year Kwik Gourmet showed that they will play second fiddle to nobody. This year, all three champs were retired in order to give somebody else a chance to shine.
