Little Morocco is Back!!!

The cart looks different, but the food is better than ever! Omar is still "on vacation" according to the new operator, but the cart seems to be in very capable hands. I got the chicken/lamb combo over rice and noticed a few key differences.

It looks like he is now stewing the chicken in a big pot with a number of aromatics and then finishing it on the grill when it is ordered. The texture was perfect and the flavors were robust. The lamb gyro now cooks in plain view of the customer (don't know if I ever saw it at the old cart) and also tastes great. As always, there are tons of veggies to throw in and the hot sauce carries a lot of heat.

Also, for those of you concerned by the NY Post hit job - the cart looks spotless.

Finally, ask him to bring back the green sauce!

  1. Little Morocco is the ultimate place for homemade merguez and great kababs. Merguez sandwich worth the subway ride, sitting outside on a cool evening with hot harissa and merguez!

I think you're confused. This is Little Morocco the street meat cart, not Little Morocco the restaurant in Astoria or Comme Ci Comme Ça the Moroccan food truck.

Actually it looks like Omar has moved to L.A. permanently... he's the guy I was referring to in this post on the L.A. site:

Tried to go today and there was no sign of them.

The cart doesn't say "Little Morocco." It's a new cart. I saw it there this AM before they opened up. But it is them. The owner is a small, mousy guy with a moustache. He's usually the lunch operator now.

Yeah, went today after a long hiatus and Kopper is right. It no longer says "Little Morocco" and it's now green. But the cart does look cleaner. The meat is cooked a bit differently, and you don't get the crispy bits (dried out chunks?) you used to. The rice was a bit different too, no cloves from what I can see.

But it is recognizeable as a close cousin to the old food. The white sauce was nice and herby, the green sauce was there, and red sauce brought the spicy. He'll actually put on a lot if you ask him to, and I'm hurting right now because of that.

No french fries, but those were always spotty even with Omar. There was a nice salad side, which included corn, tomatos, cilantro, garbanzos, etc. There was red cabbage, which was a nice touch I don't remember seeing before.

I think it's wrong to get too focused on the Omar/ No Omar thing when this guy is working hard and still putting out a good product.

Well, here I was about to post almost the same thing as steveroller. I checked it out today and it's definitely Little Morocco-ish, the corn and cilantro thing is fairly distinctive. Maybe it's just psychological, but while it was fine, it didn't have that "this is awesome street meat" thing I got a few times when Omar was there. Still, it's very close to my office and I'll certainly be back.

  8. I had the same experience yesterday. He cooked the chicken on the grill this week instead of in the pot with onions/peppers (which I only saw last week and was a big fan of), otherwise everything was the same and really great in my opinion. Green sauce was back, which was awesome. I also think that either the hot sauce is hotter than it was before or the new guy just doesn't blanket the food in white sauce the way Omar did.

It doesn't say Little Morocco anymore, but if you ask the guy he will tell you it's the same. I also remember seeing this guy work the old cart a few times while Omar was transitioning out, so I believe him (although I still don't believe his "vacation" line, which he started giving me when Omar left the old cart months ago).

Also, for what it's worth, I brought a few new coworkers there who had no "Omar bias" and they loved it and couldn't believe how good everything was for just $5.

FYI for other regulars - Today (Oct 31) The cart owner told me they would be gone for a few weeks while they get their license renewed.

  10. yeah, no cart today
