Wafels & Dinges’ Corn Waffle With Chili Makes A Good Light Lunch

Last week’s cooler weather brought out the sweaters and also a lot of hearty seasonal specials at trucks and other lunch spots. Wafels & Dinges took the opportunity to add to its savory side with the winter addition of the corn waffle with either meat or vegetable chili along with some toppings. But would this $7 concoction be more of a lunch than one of their regular sweet waffle concoctions?

Our Heros Truck Only Off The Road Temporarily (Updated Below)

ScreenHunter_01 Oct_ 16 23_02

Last night the Our Heros Truck sent out the above tweet saying the truck was out of business (after less than a year), and my reaction seemed to be the same as at least a couple of other people who asked “WTF?” It seems the last time the truck was on the streets was last Friday, or at least that was the last time they tweeted a location. It’s unclear at this point why Our Heros decided to stop selling its giant sandwiches and other Italian-American specialties to the lunch crowds at Wall & Water, and whether their slider cart is also gone for good. Will you all miss this truck? Update: Midtown contributor Brian spoke with the cart operator who was confused and said the cart’s still out (on Hanover Sq. today), and the truck is just off the road until they can find a replacement for a manager who was let go. Seems like a case of an ex- truck employee gone rogue via Twitter…

Help Trucks Give To World Food Day: A bunch of food trucks are donating 5% of revenue today to stop hunger including Souvlaki GR and Phil's Steaks downtown. The WFC lot has Cupcake Crew, Munchie Mobile, Palenque, Phil's Steaks and Bongo Brothers, Frites N Meats and Bob & Jo are at Hanover Sq., Cinnamon Snail's and Tribeca Tacos are at Wall & Water, Rickshaw's at Wall & William, Mike N Willie's is at Wall & Front and Hibachi Heaven's at Water & Broad.

PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Dan”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch: Downtown, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Dan who has a soft spot for pho and a big, carefully composed plate of nachos.

Name: Dan Fusaro

Occupation: Software developer for a photography services company

Where you work: 32 Avenue of the Americas -the wide building with many antennas on top where every street near the Holland Tunnel meets.  Most major radio stations in NYC broadcast from here.

Age: Just turned 32

Favorite kinds of food: I like a balance between nice stuff like veal chops and lobster to tripe and stewed meat.  I’m not sure I can commit to any one favorite cuisine, but if was forced to in a “Sophie’s Choice” situation I’d probably say Italian, since it is so diverse.  Also, I can eat a nice “questionable meat”-laden pho for any meal of the day, and have.

Least favorite foods: As a kid I was a picky eater but had a series of small revelations as a teenager and now I can say there isn’t any particular food I would refuse.  That being said, I am generally distrustful of new-school food trucks and feel that the hype all too often overshadows quality and value.

Up in Soho, Cinnamon Snail, Crisp and Schnitzel & Things are at Hudson & King.

Giving Bob & Jo’s Truck A Second Chance With Its Rice Plate

Back in May after the Bob & Jo Truck started parking in the Financial District one day a week, I had a bulgogi sandwich that had a lot going for it, but was marred by too-chewy baguette. I haven’t been back because there are about a million other trucks hitting the area these days that consistently serve delicious food. On Tuesday (when the truck parks on Hanover Sq.), although the siren song of the many taco trucks crowding the lower FiDi was strong, I instead headed to Bob & Jo where a line of people was ordering rice plate after rice plate. Perhaps trying a baguette sandwich at a Korean food truck had been too risky a venture and the meat over rice was where it was at.
