Flatiron Lunch: Brats Serves Up Delicious Sausage to Chelsea

Every Friday our man UltraClay goes south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Last fall, a friend told me about the opening of Brats a casual diner by Chef Daniel Angerer on 23rd Street and 9th Avenue. I don’t really know much about the chef, but the name alone got my attention. Calling itself a sort of Austrian diner, they focus on housemade sausages of all sorts of varieties.

It sounded great but, how often do I find myself in Chelsea for lunch? That is, until my recent visits to the area for Barbecue and Doughnuts, I finally found an excuse to check it out.

$1 Pizza Store Coming to 6th Ave

_MG_5872 - Version 2

The dollar pizza plague trend is spreading! Yesterday, I found this sign up in the narrow storefront on 6th Avenue near 39th Street that used to be a Tasti D-Lite. Personally, if I’m over there looking for a bite, I’d probably hit Kati Roll Company (on 39th btw. 5+6th) or the Desi Food Truck, but on those days when you only have $2 or $3 to spend on lunch, this will definitely come in handy.

Korilla BBQ Tests Out New Menu Items

Korilla BBQ line

This week I noticed on the ML Twitter Tracker that Korilla BBQ was trying out some new menu items–citrus glazed version of their “Wonderbird” (aka chicken) and the KALBiester which is their take on traditional BBQ (kalbi is marinated short rib). Being a Korilla fan, I had to go check it out. Read more »

Bar Pies are Good For You!: Papa Perrone is in the shop, but Taim Mobile is on 40th and 6th, Korilla is on 55th and Lex, Bian Dang is on 53rd btw Park+Lex, Schnitzel & Things is on 52nd and 6th, Wafels & Dinges is on 46th btw. 5+6th, and Eddie's Pizza is on 52nd btw. Lex+3rd (and their pies are only 270!).  As always check the ML Twitter Tracker before heading out.

Joyride Hit By a Bus, Will Return This Weekend

Joyride Truck
Thursdays are usually Joyride’s midtown day, but this week they’re off the road. According to Twitter “A bus hit our truck over Sunday. Luckily the damage isn’t too bad. We’ll prob. be back up&running this weekend.” Yikes. Hope that everyone is ok and that the truck is on the mend soon.

Previti Pizza Deal Alert: Today's InBundles deal is a good one for fans of Previti Pizza (on 41st btw. Park+Lex), the 2010 Midtown Lunch Reader's Poll winner for Best Pizza.  Get a large cheese pizza for only $9, limit 5 pies per person but you can use all 5 Bundles in one visit! (Pizza party time?)  The best part is, it's good for delivery so you don't even have to leave your desk to enjoy this one.

Contributor Stalking (The “Now This is a Salad We’d Eat” Edition)

The Cheek Correa

Brownie recommends a salad from Paulie Gee’s in Greenpoint that we can all get behind, while Blondie introduced yet another person to Shopsin’s.  Chris H. gave 4 stars to Tenpenny in Midtown East, Donny had a “fantastic” burger at Dubuque in Carroll Gardens, and Ultraclay drooled over the doughnuts at Dough in Bed-Stuy. And our newest contributor Brian had the honey rosemary ice cream at DessertTruck Works as part of his effort to eat through TONY’s Top 100 Dishes of the Year.

Around the rest of the ML Universe, Andrea had one of the best pita sandwiches she’s ever eaten down in the FiDi, Jamie got herself into a hairy situation eating mutton in Philly, and I took one of my favorite Los Angeles food trucks to task for trying to spin their closure as happy news.

Massive Block Long Deli Opening Monday

Just walked by Cafe R, the new deli on 32nd btw. 6+7th that we told you about back in January, and they’re almost ready to open.  The shelves were stocked already with generic deli things like sancks, candies, drinks, etc. and they will be serving breakfast, coffee, pasta, asian food, wraps (aka pretty generic deli stuff.)  It’s not the Food Gallery 32 we were hoping for but it is massive! The place stretches all the way to 31st street, like Cafe Duke, but times 4.

Check out the football field’ish inside after the jump…
