Midtown Lunch

Bold (and often ridiculous) food claims are what NYC Food Guy (aka Lunch’er Lawerence aka Superman) is all about, so we’ll take this one with a grain of salt.  Apparently the spicy chicken pizza from Cafe Duke (on 51st btw. 6+7th) is the best non-restaurant pizza in all of Midtown. Now, you know we love their Korean food…. and their fake shrimp… and their occasional soft shelled crabs.  But is this really the best we can do for pizza?  Feel free to defend or refute his claim in the comments.

Have you ever been kind of jealous of the winners of Zach’s various cart tours?  Even though I work in midtown and can hit the great midtown carts anytime I want, there’s something to be said about the fun of taking on a bunch of them at once.  To really do it right you need strength in numbers, so when I learned that a couple of my friends from Seattle, would be in town and free for lunch during the week, I started plotting potential food adventures.  Both of them regularly read Blondie & Brownie and they were jealous of the midtown cart/food truck scene.  The more I thought about it, the more convinced I became that we should try to hit as many carts for as many different types of foods as possible and with that in mind, may a present Brownie’s Cart Canyon Tour: 10 carts/10 cuisines/$10 a person…

Monday brought the oddly named new March Midtown Lunch sandwich at Cer Te, “The Fall of Saigon.” I’ll say it… the name’s no good. I don’t know what it should be called, but definitely not this. Maybe Hanoi Matthew instead? Or The Matthew? Or All That’s Missing is a Beer?

Yushi (on 47th btw. Park+Lex) has always been about the craziness (conveyor belt sushi, dim sum, the new and improved refrigerated conveyor belt, peking duck days, and bogo free greatest hits bentos.)  But this could be the best of the lot: according to Urbandaddy they’ve just started serving an off the menu bowl of ramen covered in a glass of sake (!?) We are so on this… but should it be a lunch or a Happy Hour post?  Early adopters, let us know what you think in the comments.

There have been a lot of changes here on Midtown Lunch over the past few months, and while most of you probably don’t care (“just tell me where the damn lunches are in Midtown!”) for those who do we’ve redesigned our “Contact” page to make things a little easier. Not sure who you should be emailing tips to? Or following on Twitter? Hopefully this page will answer all of your questions.

It seems pretty likely that all of the new places that make up the recent Japanese “invasion” of Koreatown are owned and operated by Koreans rather than Japanese.  Arang hides nothing with its mixed menu of Korean and Japanese foods and Haru Hana’s broad survey of all foods Japanese is a bit unusual. The latest beach head is Izakaya Moku (on 32nd btw. B’way+5th), and it has inspired much consternation among chowhounders and other seekers of authenticity. Here’s the thing: I don’t really care.

I love Japanese food. And until recently, the only option for those of us working near 34th Street was to hop the 6 train. I’ve happily checked out the other places that have popped up in K-Town, and jumped at the chance to try out Izakaya Moku.

The long awaited grand opening of the new Kyochon (on 5th Ave. btw. 32+33rd) was supposed to be today… and yet this was the disappointing scene just a few minutes ago.  We know the place is ready to roll (the paper was down on Monday and they were making chicken for a photo shoot), but according to this morning’s New York Times the grand opening date is now March 5th. (That would be Friday.)  Sorry Korean fried chicken fans…you’ll just have to wait two more days.  Pizzacone anybody?
